I cannot believe I need glasses! I'm going to be such a freak at school and it's going to ruin my reputation! Bethany thought to herself on the way home from the eye doctor. On the way home, her mom stopped at Safeway to pick up some groceries.

Bethany refused get out of the car as her mom pulled into the parking lot and into an open spot, cramed against an old Ford truck and an immense SUV.

"I'll be back," her mom kissed her cheeck. Bethany scowled as her mom slammed the door shut and headed in.

She whipped out her phone and started texting her friends immediately. She was mid-way through the message when she heard a light tap on the window.

"Yes?" She rolled down the window without even glancing away from her phone until the text was sent.

"Could you spare some change?" An old man held out his hands. Bethany frowned disapprovingly and grabbed a few coins from the pocket of her jeans.

"It's not much," she shrugged lightly, dropping the coins into his hands and returned her attention to her phone.

"Ah, but something is better than nothing right, dear?" He winked as I gave a quick weak smile and rolled my window back up.

What a creep, she thought as she rolled her eyes. And if I were him, I'd call me a cheapo. And something better than nothing? If you want something you got to get it all right?

Soon, her mom returned and they were on the road once again.

"Hon, you have to wear those glasses tomorrow," her mom said as they pulled into the driveway of their four floor mansion.

"Eww, no," Bethany placed her hands on her hips and pouted as they headed into the house. "Mom they are hideous."

"You need them."

"Do not!" She screamed as she storms into the house and up the stairs to her bedroom. She slammed the door shut and buried herself among her multiple pillows and blankets.

The next morning, Bethany snuck down the stairs without her glasses and made way into her car. In front of her, things suddenly appeared so blurry. She squinted and started the engine to her custom, pink BMW.

She drove slow and steady as she blasted the music and hummed along, distracted from the road.

Suddenly she heard a screech and felt a hard impact against her head.

When she was consious again, it was at the hospital, surrounded by several doctors. One in particular shone a light into her eyes and asked her what she saw.

"Darkness..." Bethany whispered slowly. She couldn't see anything and started to panic. "What's wrong?"

"Bethany, the blow from the accident could have done damage to your brain causing the loss of eye sight," the doctor exhaled deeply as a tear ran down the side of her face.

"That can't be true!" She shrieked in fear as she shook her head violently. "You're lying!"

"They're not, dear," an old familiar voice whispered. She'd heard that voice before but just couldn't recall who's it is.

"Who are you?" Bethany reached out her hand as she tried to find where the voice came from. "Where are you?"

"If you don't want something, then you get nothing," the voice spoke again followed by a small chuckle and utter silence.

"What do you mean?" She cried but came no reply. She couldn't see and that was that. Everything now was pitch dark and empty, just like her heart.

But it would have been better to have taken what you got because something, is always better than nothing.
