My mother always told me fairies existed. I never believed her. Until now that is.

It was Autumn, six years ago and I was in my big old parka and knitted toque. Here, where I live, it can get really cold, even if it's only mid October.

I raced past the small pumpkin patch in the backyard and jump into a large leaf pile that my mom had been raking up for the past thirty minutes.

"Hey!" My mom came over with a weak smile on her face. At that age, I didn't know too much and practically ignored the fact that my mom was very sick with something. Then, all I worried about were the monsters under my bed.

"Sorry mommy," I whisper then run into her legs for a warm hug. My cheeks were flushed red and I was freezing outside.

"Now the fairies won't have a nice, cozy home for this winter," she shook her head and began raking again. My mom was a very imaginative person. Probably more than me. And she tended to believe all of these fairy tales whereas I didn't.

I'd felt bad that I'd ruined my mom's hard work and worse yet, when she collapsed to the ground. That's when I started believing in fairies.

I saw little sparks flutter from behind this house that my mom made out of a bush and some berries. She had once said that it was a home for the fairies.

The little sparks flew across the air and landed next to my mom's lifeless body. I stood there in awe as they encircled her body, picking her up and off the ground. There then came little giggles that followed with my mom's eyes opening.

"Thank you again..." She whispered as the sparks disappeared from view.

"Mom?" I asked as she picked me up, spun me around and smiled. "Who were they?"

"They were the fairies," she waved in the direction of the sparks and got back some colourful flashes of light.

"Fairies don't exsist," I giggled as my mom kissed my cheek and poked my nose.

"They do sweetie, don't forget that," then, she led me into a waltz, in the cold, October air.
