Chapter Two
"Um... I'm sorry." I told him. "I thought you were my boyfriend Will." I wiped my tears and started to get up. But he grabbed my hand.
"What's your name, Cracka?" I laughed.
"My name is Deirdra. My friends call me Deir. What's your name?" I held my hand out.
"Name's Raymond. My Homies call me Ray." He just starred at my hand. I put it back down at my side.
"Ooooo, Ray! You's got the quickness fo gettin' girls, now don't ya?!" The other new black guy walked up and patted Raymond on the back.
"Deirdra, this is my brother, Angel. Angel, this is Deirdra. And no, Angel, she is not my girl."
"Hi, Angel." I smiled to him. "Can I call you Ray?" I asked Raymond.
"Sure you can. Can I call you Deir?"
"Sure. Do I just call you Angel?" I looked up at Ray's brother.
"Yeah, cuz I'm an angel." Ray laughed. "Don't laugh brotha. You know that when I die, I'll be yo Gaurdian angel, justa watchin' you make mistakes." Ray laughed again.
"You won't be no Angel. You be a ghost."
I laughed. "Why do you think he would be a gho-"
"Deir. Come here. Lets go." Will said, holding out his hand.
"Oh, well, it was nice meeting you two. See ya next time?" I smiled at them and grabbed Will's hand. "Why are we leaving?" I asked.
"You're dad is here. My dad asked him to pick me up to. Lacie's already in the car. I followed him to my dads four door truck and we got in.
"Dad, why are you picking us up?"
"Well, John asked me to and I'll tell you why when we get home." John was Will and Lacie's dad.
"Ok."
We were at home and I had fixed lasagna. Dad had two helpings, and I had one. I was now washing the dishes.
"Daddy. TEll me why you picked us up."
"I know you hang out with Lacie. John told me. And I don't care. She's a good girl." I hugged him and thanked him.
"Now please tell me why you picked us up from school early today."
"Okay. Did you hear about the two new boys that moved into La Cygne?" I nodded.
"Yeah. They're cool. I like them."
"Don't!" Dad said feircly, making me drop the plate. "Don't like them. They're niggers. Niggers don't belong in La Cygne. Got it? And I don't want to hear about you or see you hanging out with them. Got it, Deirdra?!" I was shocked.
Why would dad call them the "N" word?! How rude! "Dad, why would you call them that?"
"Because that's what they are. Okay, I lied. The don't belong anywhere in the Unieted States! Go back to Africa, you stupid Porch Monkeys! We will drive you outta here, whether you like it or not!"
"Dad! Shame on you!" I slapped him and he pinned me to the ground, the scent of beer on his breath.
"Don't say shame on me. Shame on you for liking them!" Dad tied me on top of the coffee table with belts. He came back into the room with bibles and holy water.
He sprayed some water on me and read a passage from the bible.
After Dad untied me, I took a shower. I got out and talk to Will on the phone and told him about what dad said. I told him how I thought it was so wrong.
"No, Deirdra. It isn't wrong! Stay away from them! They're just yard apes, okay? They're not like us!" I was so appauled that I hung up on him.
It seems like everyone I know is racist now! Well, besides Gage.
