Chapter 8
It was now April 3rd, and a month ago was the first time I had met Petunia. Almost every night, I would go and hang out with Clare, then Gage would pick me up and we would go to Petunia's house.
The police were searching everywhere for Gage. He was living somewhere underground near Petunia's house, but they wouldn't tell me where because of "safety reasons". One day the cops even came over to my house to ask me about it.
Flash Back
I was talking on the phone with Angel, (Rays Brother) arranging what time Gage would pick me up. Of course we were using code names for Gage. We called him Erik, on the phone, just in case it was tapped. The door knocked, and I quickly said goodbye. I walked to the door, unlocked it, and opened it.
"Officer?" I asked, confused.
"Deirdra Smallders?"
I nodded.
"Is Harold Smallders home?"
"No, sir. He's at work."
"Well, Deirdra, do you mind if I come inside and ask you a few questions?" The cop asked me.
"Do you have a warrant?"
He laughed. "No, Ma'am. But I'm not going to try to search your house."
"By all means then." I stepped to the side and held the door open for him. He walked inside and politely took off his hat. "Want something to drink officer?"
"Call me Kirk. And Yes please. Coffee." I turned and looked at his badge. Kirk Gaston. Should I tell him about all of the bad stories that my father has told me about him? No. Probably not.
I turned and grabbed two cups from the cabinet.
Kirk and my father HATE eachother. Kirk spent two year trying to get Gage out of "Camp". He always tried to help Gage. That's why dad hates Kirk. But Kirk hates dad because Kirk lost his son and wife in a car accident. He doesn't know how anybody could be so cruel to their kids. You're supposed to love them.
I poured coffee into one cup and then poured orange juice into the other. Kirk smiled warmly when I handed him the cup.
After taking a drink of the hot coffee, Kirk started the questioning. "Do you know who this man is?" He showed me a picture of Gage, taken on the backround that goes onto their reccord when they go to jail.
I faked glee. I snagged the picture out of his hands. "That's Gage. He looks so much older!"
"When was the last time you saw your brother, Gage Smallders?"
"Ten years ago." No hesitation. Dang, I'm good at this!
"And are you aware that Gage has escaped from The Bridge County Jail?"
"What...? Gage Is In Camp. Not Jail."
"Ehhh..." He quickly jotted that down in his notebook. "Okay, are you aware that Gage has escaped from "Camp"?"
"Yeah. I heard on the news that it was the best camp since Alkatraz." SHIT! Gosh, I screwed up.
He raised an eyebrow. "Right. Uhm, One more question. Do you have any idea of where he might be?"
