I grabbed a golf club from the back of the cart and tossed it in my hands. I looked across the street. The section where the figure had been was closed off by police tape.
Sighing, I hopped in the cart and started driving. Suddenly, a random figure stepped in front of the cart. Skidding to a stop, I was right in front of him. He grinned up at me. It was him!
"It's you!" I glared. He smirked like nothing happened.
"My name isn't You. It's Volant." He ran a hand through his ruffled black hair.
"Does it look like I care?" I shot, making my foot hover over the gas in an attempt to be threatening.
"Well, looks can be deceiving." He smirked again.
"Just get out of the way." I growled, wiping a hair out of my eyes.
"Okay. Hey, where you going? I need to stop by the gas station for donuts." Volant hopped in the car by me.
"Uh, definitely not the gas station and definitely not with you." I pushed up my purple glasses and he scowled then smirked.
"Well. Too bad cuz that shadowy figure is about 400 feet away." He leaned back in the seat. I pushed on the gas.
"Are you sure?" I asked over the engine. I took the risk to look back and, sure enough, the figure was there. Gasping, I pushed the pedal to the floor and risked giving myself and Volant whiplash.
"It'd be better to stop at the gas station. They added a grocery store and a storm shelter." He was looking behind us, eyes sparkling. I paused.
"Fine. You'll get your dumb donuts." I muttered with a growl, drifting into the parking lot. I grabbed the golf club and starting running inside.
"Uh, no offense, whatever-your-name-is, but a golf club isn't gonna work." Volant said, opening the door. I saw the figure coming over the hill.
"It'll at least give us time to run, and the name's Forest." I pulled him in the shop and tied an extra rubber band around the door handle. The bell rang when we came in.
"Where to hide, where to hide?" I thought aloud.
"Y'know, there's a storm shelter." Volant brushed his hair out of his eyes. I looked out the door and he figure was about 500 feet away.
"What are you waiting for? Cmon!" I stomped my foot a little as he grabbed my hand and slipped into a narrow opening and into a storm shelter. He locked the door.
"Good. We're safe." I sighed, pulling out my phone for some light.
"How long has he been chasing you?" He asked.
"Who? The shadowy figure? About a day, I think." I murmured, scrolling through my feed in Instagram cuz why not.
"Umm. Well. I think he knows your address so it might've been more than that." Volant sat down on an ice chest. I hesitated.
"Oh jeez and crackers. Welp. If you know so much about him, why not tell me?" I asked him, sitting on a stool.
"Well, if I did, you'd have to know about me first and I'm not so sure you want to know about me, Forest." He muttered, messing with his wavy hair once more.
"I really want to know. I mean, it's not like we're going to be out of here in a few seconds." I leaned back and heard him sigh.
"Fine. Just don't yell or laugh, 'kay?" Volant stood up. I nodded.
He sighed. "Okay. Here goes. I am Hermes, God of Messages, Thieves, Merchants, and you can look up the rest." I paused. Then coughed my way out of laughter.
"You have got to be kidding me. You? A Greek God?" I laughed a little. He rolled his eyes.
"Want me to prove it?" He put a hand on his hip. I chuckled.
"Yeah sure. I wanna see your totally real proof." I said with sarcasm.
"Well, same rules apply so get ready." He grabbed my golf club. Before I could say a word, a small puff of light made me blink, and the club turned into a shimmering, golden caduceus. I felt my jaw drop.
"What?!" I asked.
"Now do you believe me?" He sighed as if annoyed.
"I'll consider it." I grinned. Volant rolled his eyes. Suddenly, the bell rang. The figure was here. I was going to ask a question, but Volant put a finger on his lips.
Suddenly, a scream rang out, then another, then it was quiet. The bell rang again.
"Is he gone?" I thought. I looked over at Volant. Seemingly knowing what I was thinking, he shook his head no.
"Come out, Come out wherever you are~!" A distorted voice rang out in the darkness. I felt my heart race and I heard it pound in my ears. Volant cursed under his breath.
"I know you're in here~!" The darkness of the voice echoed in my head and I had to hold my ears to make it stop. It was like hell itself had a voice.
"I said come out." The figure was getting annoyed. Luckily for me, Volant was too. So was I, actually. Silence rang out for a second. I heard a bang.
"COME OUT RIGHT NOW!!" The voice was full of anger and hate. Volant grabbed my hand and yanked me behind a pile of products.
"Wh-"
"Don't say a word. He's going to come for us and you need to stay still. We'll use my shoes to get outta here, but don't. Move." He whispered. I paused.
"Who is he?" I asked, ducking under a box.
"He's the god of the Underworld and Souls of the Dead." Volant sat by me. Before I could guess who it was, footsteps echoed in the hall. I shut up real quick.
"I know you're in here~!" The figure said. I heard Volant digging in a bag. The footsteps came closer. I saw the outline of the figure right by Volant. Gasping, I grabbed the staff, ran by the figure, whacked him over the head, and started running. A cold hand wrapped around my hood and pulled. My heart skipped a beat as I choked and stopped breathing for a second. I flew on the floor and felt my body slam into the concrete floor. I groaned and saw the figure stand over me.
"Forest! Where-" Volant stopped short as he realized I was trapped.
"Just go, Volant." I told him, attempting to get up. The figure slammed a foot in my chest. It exploded in pain and I collapsed on the floor once more.
"I'm not leaving you." His voice was overly dramatic.
"And I'm not leaving without her either. She knows, Hermes, and you can't stop me." The figure grabbed me with surprising strength. My feet dangled off the floor.
"Hades, stop. She doesn't know anything. Just let her go." Volant scowled. The figure took his hood of. Cold, coal-black eyes stared at me, holding no emotion but loathing and sadness. He was deathly pale, a coldness in his touch. His void-black hair had a streak of blood red.
"Let. Her. Go." Volant's voice was suddenly full of authority. I twisted my neck to look at him.  "What is going on?" I mouthed. Before he could say anything, an angry voice broke the silence.
"Hermes, so help me, you will go away or face the wrath of death." The figure dropped me on the floor and a scythe appeared in his hand. I looked at Volant and he nodded. With a swift movement, he grabbed the caduceus and slammed it into Hades' gut. He crumbled to the ground long enough for Volant to grab me and sprint. He ran up the stairs to the roof.
"Do you trust me?" He asked, panting, standing on the edge.
"I have no choice but to!" I told him as Hades started climbing the stairs after us. Volant wrapped a hand around mine.
"Good. Let's go." He winked, then fell backwards off the roof, bringing me down with him.
