The sun was setting, a quaint little house darkening as the night came. The trees in the woods nearby the house blocked any remaining sun-light, leaving the ten year old Katrina alone in the dark. She was told to be back inside before night came, losing track of time she was now lost and alone, afraid of the creatures in the woods. As she heard a rustling nearby she shrieked quickly, turning around she saw glowing eyes in the dark. Only a deer, but to her it was a monster. She bolted through the woods running fast,
"Heeeeelppp!!!!" She screamed, tears streaming down her face.
Chanel, thirteen at the time, walked outside from the house to search for her little sister. When she saw no sign of her she filled with worry. Suddenly she heard the screams from the woods. Without a second thought she bolted, following the screams.
"Katrina, where are you!" Chanel yelled, Katrina heard and stopped in her tracks, a smile forming in the tears.
"I'm here! Chanel, I'm here!!" She called out, as Chanel neared Katrina ran to her, jumping into her arms now crying tears of relief and joy.
"I was so scared..I thought I was gonna die.." muttered Katrina, burying her face into Chanel's shoulder. Chanel lifted her face up and looked her in the eyes.
"I'd never let you die."
"NOOOO"
The screams of Katrina froze the room. Mason looked to Chanel's body that lay motionless on the floor, he looked to Grace who was riddled with guilt. At first a smirk spread on Estella's face, then a moment of pure fear before she covered it again with the same smirk.
Ava smiled, she laughed as it happened. But now, her face fell. This wasn't as she imagined it, everyone angry, fearful, depressed all because of her. She dropped the gun as it broke the silence with a hard thud on the ground.
Katrina darted her head to look to Ava, sadness and pure anger in her eyes. She gripped her knife tightly.
"Please..I didn't mean it to be like this.." Ava began to plead, but Katrina wasn't going to buy it this time.
"Go." Katrina said in a shaky but intimidating voice.
"What?" Ava said hopelessly.
"GO!" Katrina screamed at her, then turning to Estella and Grace.
"ALL OF YOU, JUST LEAVE. YOU HAVE DONE ENOUGH!" She screamed at each of them, the tension in the room turning to fear of what would happen next. Mason tried to approach Katrina.
"Grace didn't want to Katrina, she was forc-" Before Mason could finish defending Grace he was cut off.
"She wasn't forced to do anything, she just had to toughen up enough to fight back." Grace looked down as Katrina spoke.
"I'm not leaving." Ava protested.
"Seconded." Estella said.
"Please Katrina, why can-" Again cut off, Katrina yelled at all of them now.
"You killed the only person that truly mattered to me. You are lucky I don't kill you Ava. And for the rest of you? You didn't help. So just leave!" Even as Katrina yelled they all shook their heads.
"Fine." Katrina said, verging on tears. She didn't say another word, simply walked out of the store, slamming the door behind her.
The room stood still.
3 Hours Later
Katrina had been wandering through the woods, tears now stained her cheeks. It was now pitch black out. She looked around, realizing she was lost in darkness, barely seeing an inch in front of her. She gripped her knife in her hand and screamed, stabbing it into a tree behind her. She hung her head, hanging on the knife stuck in the tree.
"Chanel.." She muttered through sobs,
"You aren't here to save me this time.."
Back at the store, Mason and Grace shared the storage room. Although sleeping in the same room they were distant, no verbal or emotional connections. In the bathroom was Ava and Estella, in a heated argument.
"You could have easily killed the other one as she walked out!" Estella yelled, mocking Ava's weakness.
"Why should I?! She left! She is finally out of our hair." Ava spat back, hiding her deep guilt.
"You are guilty. You are weak. If you could go back you would have never shot Chanel, I wouldn't have been surprised if you shot yours-"
"SHUTUP" Ava screamed, hanging her head immediately after, her red-orange hair covering forming tears. Estella's face freezed for a moment. After a minute she cleared her throat,
"Weakling." She said in a monotone voice.
Estella walked out, leaving Ava to her own thoughts.
Mason looked to Grace, opening his mouth to speak.
"Don't." Grace said, in a surprisingly stern voice.
"I only want to.."
"I don't care Mason. I don't need a guilt trip from you. I know I could have stopped Ava, but I was weak. I know." Grace's countenance was stern, however it was still obvious to see she was about to cry. Mason tried to move closer to Grace.
"I SAID NO" Grace squealed, shoving Mason to the side. As soon as she did she gasped, covering her mouth with her hands.
"I'm..I'm.." Grace choked on her words.
"Grace.."
"Just leave me alone.." Grace said, holding back sobs. She wiped her eyes swiftly, jogging out of the room. She leaned outside the door for a moment, sliding down to the floor. She cried into her hands, moving her hands to her head she looked to the ceiling.
'I need to fix this..'
With sudden determination Grace stood up, marching towards the outside door.
Mason opened the storage room door as he heard her footsteps.
"Grace, wait!" Mason yelled. Grace turned slowly to him, with a stoic expression.
"Let me go." She said sorrowfully, opposing her expression. She turned and left, the door slowly closing behind her.
"Why must you always do the right thing in the end.." Mason muttered.
