"Boss?" Ellie greeted, entering the man's office. "Stokes. Whatcha need?" Ellie gave a small smile. "Hey, um... It's my lunch break. Would you mind if I made a few phone calls? They're pretty important." Ellie and Mark had switched schedules, so her lunch break was an hour earlier than usual. But the best part? Boss would never be able to find out.
He furrowed his brow and lowered his head, still locking his gaze on hers. With the push of a finger, his glasses were lowered. "Make it quick," he pronounced sharply. "Ellie nodded quickly and thanked him. "Rare," she added to herself quietly.
She had fifteen minutes. Adam is first.
"I should text him, right? Texting is better... But so impersonal. I'll call him.
"Hey, Ellie," he greeted casually. "Maybe he forgot about yesterday?"
"Hey. What's up? Are you busy tonight?" She exhaled shakily. "Play it casual, Elle."
"Uh... No, actually. Why? What were you thinking?" he asked with a smirk.
Ellie could hear the smile in his voice. "There's a dance where they had the fall festival last year. Wanna go?"
"Yeah!" he exclaimed happily... too happily.
Ellie's eyes widened at his tone. "Okay," she laughed. "Chill out. Pick you up at 7:30? Or is 8:00 better?" Ellie shook her head. "Did he completely forget how weird he was acting yesterday?" she thought to herself.
"Uh, actually 7:30's fine with me. But whatever works for you is cool. I know you have work till 6:00."
"Yeah, I'm staying till 6:30 though. I was late this morning."
"Again?"
Ellie laughed. "Yeah... Again. That's what Boss said!"
Adam laughed. "But yeah, 7:30 is cool with me. I'll see you later," he added flirtatiously.
~~~
Ellie could almost see his wink and that all-too-familiar smirk. She grinned as she hung up. But there was one thing:
Why the hell was he acting so weird yesterday? And what made him switch back today? He was fine until Ellie tried to hold his hand, like they hadn't done more than that before. Yet it was perfectly fine for him flirt with her. "I just don't get it," Ellie though with a frown. "Anyway... Max!"
~~~
"Hey! How's my favorite YouTuber?!" Max greeted through the screen. "Ellie grinned and gave a comeback. "I don't know. I haven't talked to Shane Dawson in a while." Max rolled his eyes and laughed. "You know him?" Ellie nodded quickly as if saying "of course."
"Yeah. We did a bunch of collabs together last year. We got pretty close." Max leaned closer to the camera in interest. "So why don't you talk anymore? What happened?"
"Well Gossip Queen, if you must know, nothing happened. We just... went our separate ways. He helped me out with a few things, and I helped him. After that, we just kinda... I don't know, got busy."
He gave her a look. And Ellie knew exactly what it meant. "I'm serious! Nothing happened, really." Max glared at her. "Then why don't I believe you?"
