Silence. Dead silence. Max didn't take his eyes off the road, and Ellie scrolled through her Instagram feed to give her hands something to do. This. Was. So. Awkward. Ellie jumped at the sudden ringing of her phone. The screen turned black and displayed a familiar phone number. "Why didn't I just block him the last time," Ellie thought, scolding herself. Ellie sighed aloud and put the phone to her ear.
Ellie: "What, Alex? I'm in the middle of a meeting right now."
Max struggled to hold back a smile, holding back amusement at Ellie's lie. "And who's this "Alex" guy," he wondered. "She's never mentioned him before."
Alex: "Hey, I'm sorry. I just missed you. It's good to hear your voice."
Ellie thought to herself before answering. "If I humor this dumbass, maybe he'll leave me alone."
Ellie: "Yeah, it's been a while, hasn't it? I um... I can't talk now. Like I said, big meeting with some pretty important people."
Ellie scratched her forehead in embarrassment and Max's cheeks turned a bright shade of pink.
Ellie: "What if I call you later?"
Alex: "Yeah! I mean, yeah, that's cool. Just call me whenever."
Ellie: "Ok. I'll um.. call you later. Bye."
Ellie hung up before Alex could respond. And the silence was broken.
"Who was that?" Max asked, his voice cracking. Ellie hesitated before answering. "Was that jealousy?" She decided to push it, and test her theory. "A dickface who can't let go and move on." Ellie watched curiously as Max tightened his grip on the steering wheel and cocked his head to the side. "Why?" she pushed.
He answered too quickly, giving himself away. "No reason, just wondering." Ellie smirked, feeling her "flirty teenager" personality bringing itself back to life.

The airport was cold. Forget cold, freezing. Hella freezing. Enough to make Ellie's teeth chatter and the small hairs on the back of her neck stand on end. She watched as hundreds of tiny bumps rose on her arms. She groaned shakily and hugged herself tighter.
Max risked a quick glance at her and smiled confidently at the idea that presented itself to him. "Cold?" he asked with a cocky smile. "Fuck no, are you kidding?" Ellie's voice dripped with sarcasm. She glared at him miserably. "Geez, if looks could kill, Elle-" Ellie finished for him, "You'd be dead. And where did that nickname come from?" She actually liked the nickname. "It's cute," she thought to herself.
"I dunno," he shrugged. "It's cute," Ellie replied, giving in to his adorable, yet ridiculous flirting techniques. Ellie turned her attention to Nev, who they had found only a few moments ago. She and Max had silently agreed to keep their "almost-kiss" a secret. Ellie leaned into Nev's shoulder, struggling to keep warm. He wrapped an arm around her and pulled her towards him. Max's jealously got the best of him.
"Hey," he said boldly. "Have my jacket." And before Ellie could protest, she turned around to see Max stripping himself of his sweatshirt. Her cheeks turned pink as his shirt lifted up with the jacket, revealing half of his chest. "No, really, you'll be cold," she reasoned, forcing her cheeks to return to a normal color. "I'll be fine." Max shook his head and proceeded to pull the sleeves right-side-out and hand it to her.
Ellie smiled and leaned close to him in thanks. She pulled the blue jacket over her head and fixed the hood and strings. It smelled good. Like Max's cologne and that warm, comforting scent he always managed to melt Ellie's heart with. "Wait, what? What the hell am I thinking? I'm a dumbass. And that was hella creepy," Ellie thought, forcing her thoughts to stop. Instead, she snuggled between Max and Nev on a bench until their flight number was called.
Ok... that was damn cute, don't even lie. I feel like I need to incorporate Nev in this a little more, but don't worry. In the next chapter or so... I promise😂 Anyway, please vote!! Tell me if you think Nev and Ellie should flirt a bit too. I think it would be kinda cute. Comment what you guys think!
