“L” she shrieks running up to him. She hugs his waist while Lucy and Limit drag the two men out.

She cries into his shirt, Mello, Matt, and Near get up taking the Lawliet family out. Lawliet tells everyone that the reception is canceled.

Lucy and Limit drag the two men into their van; I can hear Limit yelling his own version of rights:

“You have the right to shut the fuck up

Anything you say or do will get you a bullet between your eyes

If you don’t have a lawyer, good, it means I got fewer bodies to deal with”

The van door slams shut then zooms down the road.

“Mayonaka” Lawliet gasp looking down at the little girl “how did you find me?”

She wipes away her tears gathering her thoughts. “I have been trying to find you for years” her little British voice surprises me. “L I swear I never left you, I followed the car that took you away for miles. But when I caught up to you… you were happy with your new family” she also starts crying again “I saw you didn’t need me anymore so I left. I was adopted by an elderly woman down the road from the orphanage where you were taken in” she glances at me “I watched you and her play together for years”

I suddenly remember always seeing a black cat in the snow outside of the orphanage brick fence.

“Mayonaka I looked everywhere for you before I got into that car” he whispers softly.

I look around as most of the guests have already left. Rodgers old little body still sits perfectly still in the second row by himself.

I turn to Lawliet “honey can we go back to headquarters”

The girl starts shaking as her eyes meet mine “is it safe? I need to know if the D.N.S will be anywhere close to their”

I gently pat her back “I promise it’s the safest place in the world”

(Flash back)

I remember the meows, the constant feeling that someone was watching us.

Lawliet always waking from nightmares

“Midnight!” he screamed one night.

I rush over to his bed “Lawliet you’re okay” I whisper “it was just a nightmare”.

He tries to catch his breath clenching his pillow sitting up, I try to put my arm around him but he pushes it away.

“Lawliet I’m just trying to help!” I bark at him getting up from the bed. I open the door slamming it behind me. Still In my night gown I run outside in the fluttering snow. I sit down on the snow letting my gown soak. I sat hugging my knees crying into my dress.

Suddenly a faint meow echoes though the chilly air, I look up at the darkness only able to catch a glimpse of a black cat running under a lamp post. I then look up at the sky staring at the faded stars.

“Daddy…” I whisper “why did you leave?”

Silence

“Are you singing wherever you are? I want to sing with you again” I start gasping I’m crying so hard.

Suddenly someone comes up behind me wrapping a blanket around my little body.

“David” the voice mutters behind me, I recognize the voice. Watari. “Your father is David Watterson”

“My mother?” I ask.

“Angela”

I hear the meow again.

“Do you think-“

“Yes” he interrupts “your mother and father loved you very much, and still do” he’s looking up at the sky too.  “God works in very strange ways, he takes people away even if we don’t want them to” he sighs. “But he also he gives us people who love us just as much”

Suddenly Lawliet is rushing out the front door “Angel!” he gasp wrapping his arms around my neck “don’t ever leave again”

He then whispers in my ear the words that gave me hope “i thought I would never hear your voice again”.

The next day Watari asks me the words that started it all.

“Would you like for me to adopt you?”

I look down at my feet “I’m sorry Watari but… I can’t…”

Watari chuckles “why not?”

“Because…” I don’t hold back “I’m in love with L”
