Chapter 4 "Broken Heart"

(End of flash-back)

The car comes to a stop in front of headquarters where Layla is sitting on the curb waiting for us next to Mello’s motorcycle. When she sees the car she looks up and smiles getting up.

“Hey” I say getting out of the car.

She grabs my arm pulling me through the front doors, into the elevator.

“I think mello is planning on proposing” she gasps all at once.

I try hard not to smile but Layla can still tell “he is isn’t he…”

I cover my face with my hands trying hard not to smile, sneeze, and laugh all at the same time.

“Mom!” she shrieks “you’re such a bad liar!”

Suddenly as the door opens Near is standing there with Angela in his arms

“Move! “He yells ramming himself into the elevator. Layla and I are shoved out by Emily, Rain, and Matt. Emily is crying her eyes out.

I’m barely able to ask what’s wrong before the elevator is already closed.

Layla rocks the twins in her arms trying to make them stop crying.

“Where is Lawliet?” I shriek running to the window almost crying “is Mello here?” I ask turning to the twins.

They both point to my bedroom door where the muffled sound of Mello talking on the phone is heard.

As I open the door his voice is more clear “A-n-g-e-l-a, no she doesn’t have a history of them… yes she is on her way to the hospital… no I’m telling you this was intentional, yes with the D.N.S out their they could have-“

He growls hanging up throwing his cell phone onto the bed.

“What happened?” I ask.

Mello’s eyes meet mine filled with tears and rage “Angel It’s…” he suddenly runs up to me hugging me close.

He whispers it so faintly I’m barely able to hear him “Angela had a heart attack”

I push him away “what?”

I fall to the ground crying “no... That means she’s-“

“No!” Mello growls “it couldn’t have been another Kira” he realizes how angry he is as he takes in a deep breath “sorry… Matt says she had a heart attack while they were traveling she has bad heart problems so she’s going to be fine”

“How do you know?” I whisper “I didn’t know everything was going to be fine when I lost my husband and my daughter”

The door slams open as Lawliet rushes in holding me in his arms on the ground. I start crying into his shirt.

He took off his shoes, his tux jacket, and loosened his tie.

Mello sits on the bed thinking. Hard, like he’s trying to figure something out.

“I’m going to sing to her everyday” Lawliet whispers

Softly he starts singing while he rocks me back and forth “alone she sleeps in the shirt of man. With my three wishes clutched in her hand”  

(Later at the hospital)

As we drive up I rip off the veil, my shoes, and the stupid train. I pick up the dress pushing through the revolving doors.

I rush to the front desk “I’m looking for my daughter Angela Lawliet she had a heart attack”

The nurse types on her computer “she’s in surgery right now the doctor will be with you shortly”

I gasp “what?! She’s only 17-“

“I’m sorry mam but the doctor will be with you shortly”

“No!” I yell not caring if people stare “listen MAM my other daughter was in a coma for six years, my husband and I were dead, my daughter is constantly bullied, my other daughter had Shinigami eyes, both my parents are dead including my adoptive father, I got these cross breeds that I have to protect, I’m being hunted down by some Kira worshipers, I have been wearing high heels for 8 god damn hours, and I’m pregnant. All I want now is to speak to one god damn doctor!”

Silence

“Angel you never told me you were pregnant“

“Shut up Lawliet” I tell him in my head

I look as the waiting room is now crowded with people for the wedding including Angela’s friends Heather, and Megan. Emily is crying, Matt is playing video games, Mello is getting a chocolate bar from a vending machine, Suki is sitting quietly looking down at her feet, Rain is sucking his thumb while twirling his hair, and Snow is putting bows in Rains hair.

Again the woman said that the doctor will be with us shortly. Lawliet and I sit on a love seat together.

“Lawliet, do you know why they sent our daughter into surgery?”

Lawliet sighs “I honestly have no clue”

Suki stands up “I know” she cries “they are trying to beat Kira”

Silence

“Just think, you can’t die of a heart attack unless there’s a heart to kill, right?”

Everyone nods

“So they take out her heart and put in another before her heart gives out”

“I guess that makes sense” I sigh.

She walks over putting her hand on my shoulder “everything is going to be okay” she whispers “Rain had a vision about her. She’s going to live”

She runs to her chair sitting down taking her pigtails out, She than takes off her long skirt revealing a shorter skirt under. This reveals her cat ears and cat tail.

“Ahh” she sighs “much much better!” she kicks the shirt away sitting with her legs hanging off the arm of the couch. She falls asleep, her ear flicker every once and awhile.

“Why don’t you try sleeping too” Lawliet whispers holding me in his arms. We lay on the couch, Lawliet keeps running his fingers gently though my hair until I finally fall asleep.

Lawliet gently wakes me up; my eyes open to the doctor standing their holding his clip board.

His head is hung low, his face covered in sadness.

That means only one thing

Angela… didn’t make it.
