his shield

without thinking twice, i follow the older off the building. we both fall way faster than i was expecting.

jaehwan just screams as his arms flail around. i have to use my powers to get us out of this situation.

but if i do that, he will see me again and my spell will be broken. i doubt jeonghan would be happy with me if i allowed for that to happen.

i look at the falling kid again and something in his eyes make my heart clench.

i have to save him.

i mutter a few words and i morph back into myself. jaehwan's eyes widen with shock when he sees me.

i see him mouthing 'i remember' before his eyes roll into the back of his head.

i clasp my hands together quickly and time stops. jaehwan's head is only a millimetre away from the pavement.

he would be dead if i took any longer. he nearly died this time. that was too close for comfort.

i land on my feet and i gently place jaehwan on the ground, so he will wake normally.

i remember the land lord who is on the roof and i quickly glamour myself as well as jaehwan.

i clasp my hands together again and time begins to tick once more.

"where the hell did they go?!" i hear an angry voice yell. i look up to see the land lord searching for us both. he gives up shortly afterwards and disappears from my sight.

i feel a shooting pain in my back and i let out a small yelp as i fall to my knees.

i bet jeonghan has played with the payment to make it more painful. this is the second time i've been seen.

i won't be surprised if he kills me upon my return.

jaehwan begins to stir and his jaw drops when he sees me on my knees.

"are you alright?" he asks me softly.

"i'm fine. i just had a bit of back pain" i don't tell him the full story.

"have you been taekwoon all along?" he keeps his head low as he speaks, in not sure if it's because he is afraid or if it's because he can't bring himself to look at me out of anger.

"yes. that is a long story. one which you shall never hear."

"why do you always seem to show up whenever i'm in danger?"

"ah that's-" i pause. what do i tell him? there's a magical institute which trains dead people to protect the living and i am one of those dead people and i have to protect you or i'll die.

that's not exactly something a mortal would be able to understand without calling me crazy and calling the police.

"complicated."

jaehwan rolls his eyes at my response and i just shake my head slowly as i rise onto my feet once more.

jaehwan does the same and looks up to the roof which he just fell off.

"i'm going to move out" he states firmly.
"that's a good idea. got sanghyuk to help you. it'll be fun" i smile softly and jaehwan pauses.

"how do you know about sanghyuk?"

"it's-"

"complicated?"

"uh, yeah. it's complicated."

i brush a bit of dirt off my sleeve and begin to prepare myself to unglamorous jaehwan so i can head back to the institute.

"did you get hurt badly? last time we met you said you were going to be hurt. are you okay?" he suddenly questions me and i find myself smirking.

"it took me a long time to recover. but i'm okay now." i don't bother explaining how i'm going to have to go through it all again as soon as i get back.

"i should head back. i need to sort some things out back at the institute."

"institute?" he looks at me in confusion and i don't bother responding. i've said way too much.

i raise my hand to remove his glamour but he speaks again.

"wait, so your my guardian angel?"

"no." i lower my hand and his glamour is gone.

"i'm your shield."

jeonghan is not one to greet me happily. most celebrate my return but not him.

there was a note waiting for me in my room. i could tell from the way my name was written on the front that it wasn't a secret admirer.

why is it that our greatest shield keeps making the same mistake over and over again. keep your wits about you wonshik, i will call upon you for your next punishment soon.

i just used a bit of my magic to burn the note before laying down on the bed.

i can't get the look in jaehwan's eyes as he pleaded me to save him out of my head.

they were filled with innocence. he had done nothing wrong and he just wanted me, his shield to save him.

he knows of my existence now. this is going to make my job a lot harder.
