And I know these scars will bleed, but both of our hearts believe all of the stars will guide us home.
By now, the sun had started placing golden streaks across the sky. And they both knew they'd have to say goodbye.
Whatever they had tonight, if they could even call it something, would have to end. Even though it wasn't what either of them really wanted.
She didn't want to let him go. No one had ever listened to her before like he did. She was afraid she'd never meet someone like him again. And she was afraid she'd never be able to forget him if she left.
He didn't want to let her go, either. She was a mystery and he wanted to be the one to solve her. He wanted to be the one she ran to after she felt like breaking down. He wanted to be there for her.
But they both saw their night in the park coming to an end as the first ray of morning light hit them in the eyes.
Someone had to start goodbye.
"What time is it?", she wondered aloud.
He ran his fingers through his hair. "Probably around 6:00am."
"Oh."
"Yeah. We should probably go home. I mean, not together, but t--"
She cut him off with a smile. "I know."
He smiled at the ground as she turned her gaze back to the sunrise. The sky was no longer a hazy gray. It was a light blue, almost the same kind of blue as his eyes.
Tilting her head up, away from the horizon, she looked around for any lingering stars. There was only one. The North star. And it was pointing directly at him.
Dude, you have to fucking say something. She's gonna leave soon and you're never gonna see her again. His mind was racing, his heart was thumping. She was staring at him again and he didn't know why this had to be a goodbye.
He let out a long sigh.
"Well, my dad will kill me if I miss morning practice, so..."
"Yeah, I should get going, too."
They stood up and awkwardly began stretching their arms and their legs, jumping around a little bit and walking around the park bench.
Both of them were delaying leaving as long as they possibly could, but they both knew it was coming. They might've been able to escape their lives for the night, but they couldn't escape this.
Goodbye was inevitable.
"I guess it's time to go."
"Yeah."
As she turned to walk away, he swore he felt a part of him begin to leave with her.
"Wait, don't go. At least, not yet."
She turned back around. Her heart was beating frantically out of her chest.
"Thank you. For, you know, everything. I appreciate it."
"You're welcome. You too."
They both stared at each other for a moment after that. They had no idea what else to say, because what else could they say?
He could tell her he hoped she'd never stop staring at the stars like they were her best friends. He could tell her that she was more than enough for him, and that she always would be.
She could tell him to remember that it's his life. She could tell him that it's okay to do things for yourself, regardless of what others think or want.
But they wouldn't say a word. There wasn't a point. Deep down, they both knew the odds of them ever meeting again were very slim.
So they stared at each other, hoping their messages transferred through. And, as if it was on cue, the sun finally broke the horizon, flooding the entire park in gold.
The sunrise snapped both of them out of their daze. They smiled the tiniest smiles, and turned around to go in their own directions.
He got her message. She got his.
And she realized then that she also got her wish.
Someone had finally listened to her.
But it only occurred to her after she returned home to her father's yelling that she never learned that someone's name.
