Clary lay in bed together to Jace. Her usual peaceful sleep now burdened by images of runes and drawings. Clary slowly started to move and struggle against the covers while mumbling words. Jace woke up to a kick to his ribs crying out, more in surprise than anything else. He turned to Clary but couldn't make any sense to the random words that were being mumbled by her lovely red lips. Another kick to his thy, then she elbowed him in the arm and he decided to wake her.
"Clary?" He shook her slightly. "Clary wake up. Your having a nightmare baby. Clare-bear?"
Clary shot up, took one glance at his golden eyes and worried face then darted across the room. Jace watched startled as she took out her sketchpad and drew in it.
"It happened again." Clary looked up at him and at the sight of his clueless face she added. "The rune thing? I saw a bunch of runes in the corridor last night and I kinda froze remember? Well it happened again." As she lifted up her sketchbook for him to see what she had drawn, three different runes were visible. All of them unknown to Shadowhunters.
"What do they mean?"
"Well... this one means fear. This one is torment..." Clary looked at the third rune now but didn't say what it meant.
"What about the third one baby? Tell me." Clary looked down for a few seconds then took in an unsteady breath.
"It means... we'll there isn't a word for it but... I guess the thing that could best describe it is over power, or maybe to take away the will."
Jace's POV
Clary looked up at me with those stunning emerald eyes and I could see the shame in them. I had never seen her create such dark runes before but... I'd never judge her.
"Clary why are these runes so..." before he could think of how to finish his sentence Clary cut in.
"Evil? Dark? Maleficent?"
"I was going to say different. Different from the ones you usually make. Even today you created a rune that meant angelic light but these runes? They don't seem that angelic."
"I don't know. Maybe-maybe I..."
Jace waited for several moments for her to complete her sentence but she didn't.
"'Maybe what Clary? You can talk to me baby. I'm not going to judge you. You know that. I'm here and I'll always be here."
I saw as Clary took another shaky breath then looked me straight in the eye for what felt like the first time in so long during this conversation. That's when she finished her sentence. And what she said was nowhere near what I expected to hear. She always made it so clear and always insisted on distancing herself as much as possible from them that I never even thought I had to comfort her in that way. How couldn't I have seen that the doubt in herself was there?
"Maybe it's the evil in me. The Morgenstern evil." Those two small frases almost made me loose my ground.
"Clary I."
