i pushed my foot into my sneaker, stumbling forward and out of my bedroom. the cabin was quiet for a second before i heard el ask for more waffles.
i smile and walk over, kissing her forehead and she smiles. "morning el"
"morning sis" i take a donut from the counter and take a bite, keeping it as i made dad's coffee. i walk over to el and lean my hand on the back of her chair as i ate.
"ready to go, lace?"
"yeah, your coffee's on the counter, i already made it. also, i ate the last donut" i smile and he rolls as hair as he takes a gulp of his coffee, taking a breath before finishing it.
"alright, let's go, be good el"
i smile and hug her, kissing the top of her head. "i left some magazines on my bed, and some movies i think you'll like. but save one, we'll watch it together tonight"
"okay. i love you" she says and kisses my cheek, making me smile.
"i love you millions" i grab my bag and wave goodbye before closing the door behind me. dad already had the car started, trying to heat it up a bit due to the september air getting colder.
"why are you smiling like that?"
"i'm glad el has you. she really needed that. thank you"
"she's my girl. i love her"
"and she loves you"
--
"bye pops, i love you"
"i love you more" i kiss his cheek and hop out, adjusting the strap on my bag and close the door, dad driving away. i search the parking lot for steve's car, seeing him leaning against his car, eye focused on a piece of paper. i jog over and flick his loose curl in front of his face.
"morning steve"
"morning twerp" he grumbles and i scrunch my eyebrows.
"what's with the 'tude? you riding the crimson wave?" i smile and he glares at me.
"just had a really bad night. and no one even calls it tha-"
"just tell me, i'm your best friend, i'm supposed to listen to your bullshit" i wink and he chuckles. after steve ranted to me, the first bell rung to tell us to get to class and we started walking towards the school. i heard a car coming and walked a little faster, but the blue camaro that was blasting rock music sped into a spot, nearly hitting me. "hey asshole! you almost hit me!" i shouted and he shut off his car. a red headed girl got out of his car and skated away, looking at me and giving a soft side smile.
i look at the car and hold my binder to my side, the guy getting out of his car, stomping his boot down on the ground. he slammed his car door, smirking at me and taking a puff of his cigarette, and i narrowed my eyes trying to stay mad, but this kid's smirk was just too distracting.
"sorry 'bout that, princess. but you're fine though, right? no scratches?" he smiles and winks, walking away. i look at steve and roll my eyes. he laughs and drapes his arm over my shoulder, walking me to my first period. i gave him a peck on the cheek and he left me. i sigh and walk in, sitting in the back of classroom, like i always do. i took out my journal and pencil and started to write, leaning my cheek on my hand as i wrote random words. the door swung open, catching my attention. i look up and sigh, going back to my journal.
"class, this is our student, all the way from sunny california, billy hargrove"
"the asshole has a name" i mumble so softly, sighing again.
