Well, I guess Steve wasn’t too bad. Darren and Georgia sure got closer, just like Steve said. I spent more time with him, listening to what he had to say about the attic. Then he said something so shocking I was left mesmerized.

“… And I bet you don’t know that I’m 472 years old! In ‘the attic’ you stay at the age you died. I died when I was sixteen. Whenever I am allowed to come into the human world, I grow like usual, as if I never died. For example, I have been searching for you for a year, wandering about like a weirdo looking for you. So now I am seventeen. But you’re not meant to stay in the human world if you’re dead. I have a couple of days left before I am sent back, so please, come with me.”

“To do what exactly?” I asked, my mind completely set on the fact this guy was 472 years old.

“Well… your mother wants to see you. She has been so worried… I think paying her a visit will do you good. Both of you.”

“But surely, if I was to go there I would die, and become one of them?”

“You have to fight him. Ernest. Set all those people including me free. Set your mum, dad and brother free.”

“But that would mean my brother would be younger than me!”

“Do you want your family back or not?”

I hesitated. What if I couldn’t defeat ‘him’? How could I do it anyway? Surely I should have gotten clues of some sort?

“Yes… I do. How hard is it?”

“At least seventy people have tried, and failed. They’re stuck there too now. Please. Help them. Save all those lives!”

“I said I would do it! But how?”

“Let me take you on a journey.”

“No thanks. You can just tell me.”

“No, you have to. It’s compulsory if you want to defeat him.”

I sighed, but accepted. He clasped my hand.

“What are you doing?! Get off me!”

“I can’t take you there otherwise! Please!”

I sighed yet again, but agreed.

Suddenly, the atmosphere went deadly cold. I shivered in spite of myself, as I found myself in an igloo. Wait… what?

“Where are we?” I asked nervously.

“In Ernest’s home town, Erbriel. He was brought up here. We will find out some facts about his life, and use his weaknesses to attack him. I heard from a rumour that one man called Hamish Brown found out one of his weaknesses was his past life. Ernest was afraid of his past, and hated it. Apparently he was teased because he was so clever, and his magic was the weakest. But now he has trained, and I think he is the strongest wizard in the world.”

“Yeah, but you don’t really seem certain about this. You don’t know for sure that this will work.”

I was having serious doubts about this ‘journey’.

Suddenly I heard footsteps crunching on the snow.

“Who’s there? Who’s there? Anyone here?” I heard a voice say. I looked at Steve, hoping he could do something to get us out of this mess. But he had closed his eyes, looking very concentrated. Surely, if we were found in a random person’s igloo they would be pretty mad at us.
