“Thanks Old Ben!” I called, going out of the door. Darren put his arm around me, and we went back to Maple Tree House. We got a taxi, and arrived in ten minutes.

“Sam? Darren? You’re finally back!” Alicia called from the living room. I saw Mason sitting on the couch, which was definitely unusual. Then I saw why. A new face was sitting opposite him, talking to Alicia. I quickly took my shoes off and held them. “This is Hannah Clark. I’ll leave her to you Sam!”

I smiled, and told her to follow me. I exchanged glances with Darren, and knew almost immediately to meet him on balcony 5.

“Hey, I’m Samantha. Nice to meet you!” I said with a welcoming tone.

“You too,” she replied, somewhat scared.

“What’s wrong?” I asked.

“Nothing - look, can we bring this to a room?”

“Of course! Let’s go to my room and we can introduce ourselves.”

We walked in silence, as the little kids screamed around us. I took her up the stairs into my room, closing the door to make sure no one could hear us. I even put a cushion underneath the door.

“Sit down anywhere you like!” I said. She gently lowered herself to sit on a beanbag.

“Samantha, my step-dad is horrible.” Her eyes were full of pain, and it was obvious she was hurting somewhere.

“What did he do?”

“He strangled my real dad and dumped him in a lake. Then he got a knife and cut my mum’s cheek. To make it worse… he pushed me out of his car and I tripped on the kerb, making me fracture my ankle. He told me not to tell anyone about this… but now he’s in prison so he can’t do anything to me!” she cried. Tears trickled down her cheeks, and I hugged her.

“It’s okay now. What happened to your mum?”

“She committed suicide out of shock. After finding out my real dad was murdered, she went to the top of the estate and jumped. She landed in between two cars.” More tears fell. I felt so bad…

“Did you see her fall?”

“Yes. I was on the swings with my painful ankle, and I just saw her. I shouted ‘mum’, but she didn’t reply. When she fell though, I heard her say she loved me.” She was now crying buckets.

“Okay. Well if it makes you feel any better, I saw my dad and brother die too. They went into the attic, and something’s up there. It also killed my mum, or so I suspect. In fact, in just a couple of days time, I’ll be leaving this building, and my role as head girl, and moving out. Then I’m going to search for the reason they died, and hopefully bring the, back.” She looked at me, her tears slowing down.

“I’d better introduce myself them. I’m Hannah, sixteen, and I go to Incoveshire High.”

“Really? I just left!”

“Well I only just transferred when my step-dad moved in. I used to go to Nullshire High,” she replied.

“Oh, the private school?”

“Yeah. My dad worked extra hard to get me in, and I was almost sure I was the best student. But then…”

“Shh. Don’t talk about it.” She smiled slightly, before looking down. “I’m going to bring you to your room now, okay?”

“Wait - is it possible for me to come with you on this journey thing to find the reason your parents died? I don’t care about school - there’s no reason for me to go.”
