"Hey m-mrs ducke. I-I have my moms lunch?" Evan said to the receptionist at the hospital his mom worked at. "Oh hello Evan." She responded in a cheery voice "yes your mom is in room 420 you can bring her lunch there." Evan nodded and rushed towards his moms room.
He knew the hospital well and knew that rooms that started in four were for coma patients. 'Why is she there?' He asked himself remembering that his mom never talked about working with a coma patient. The hospital was pretty big so it took him about two minutes to get there but he immediately regretted it when he did. Because there sat his mom with a thick book in her hands next to a sleeping Connor Murphy.
Evans breath immediately caught in his throat and he dropped the lunch. His moms head immediately shot up "Evan! Are you okay?" She stood up quickly and ran over to her stunned son letting the book fall to the floor. "Evan sweetie talk to me what happened?" He looked into his moms worried eyes and shook his head "n-nothing it's just. Is t-that C-con-" "Connor Murphy?" He nodded vigorously, "yes. Poor thing hasn't had any visitors since he got here."
Evan looked sadly at Connor. He looked so peaceful just sleeping in the hospital bed, "not e-even his parents?" "Nope no one. Makes you sad doesn't it? Especially why he's in here you'd think at least his sister would pop in once and awhile." "W-Why is he here?" Mrs Hansen grabbed her dons arm and led him outside the room.
"I don't think we should talk about this so much around him. He might hear us." Mrs Hansen led her son out to the courtyard where some of the patients and nurses sat eating their lunches. They sat at an old table in the corner where there was less people.
"So how was school today?" She asked obviously trying to keep the subject off Connor. "It's Saturday mom." Evan responded shortly. "Right. Weren't we gonna do something tonight?" "We we're going to g-go to the movies last night but you were working." "Shit! I knew I shouldn't have taken that shift. I'm sorry baby." The rest of the short lunch break was spent with Ms Hansen trying to make plans for them to hangout until she was told that her break was over.
"Alright sweetheart here is twenty dollars I really want you to actually get some food tonight." "Okay. I'll see you later." Evan said as his mom turned around and left towards the hospital. Evan sat there for at least thirty minutes just watching the people in the courtyard before getting up to leave. As he left though his eyes crossed over the elevator. Thinking of Connor he decided to go check on him.
Once he got into Connors room he slowly inched his way over to the abandoned book on the ground. Almost afraid of waking him up. Evan picked up the book and read the title "the adventures of Winnie the Pooh. Damn I loved this book when I was a kid." Evan whispered petting the binding and remembering the thousands of times he hid in his closet and read these pages while his parents screamed downstairs. Or the hundreds of times when he'd wake up from a nightmare and his mom would read to him to help him calm down.
Evan was snapped out of his trance by a moan sound coming from Connor. He looked down at Connor and saw that his brows were furrowed and he was shaking as if he was trying to escape from something. "Shh shh it's okay it's okay." Evan said softly running to Connors side to help him calm down, "it's just a nightmare it's okay." He grabbed Connors hand and held it tightly. "It's not real okay you're gonna be okay."
From that day forward Evan visited every day. Bringing new books to read to Connor and music and decorations for his room, like a small tree and some blue flowers Evan thought Connor would enjoy. Connors room quickly changed from the blandest room in the hospital to the brightest with the little drawings that Evan would make and tape to the wall and the music that he would blast so everyone could hear. And that was the way it was for months. At least until.
