Regret.

The most destructive force in the universe.

It was tearing my heart to pieces and crushing it to make the pieces even smaller.

I regretted keeping the secret he thought I didn't know.

I regretted keeping the secret that my two best friends would die.

I regretted not running when I had so many chances to.

I regretted not doing it when I should have.

And why did I regret even thinking that I should run, or do it?

Because I, Kasey Trevers, was head-over-heels in love with Peter Pan.

****

Pan couldn't help chuckling as he prepared for the surprise. Kasey was going to hate him forever - even though it wouldn't be a secret that she would love it. She hated surprises, which he understood completely. Surprises were a mess to handle, and hard to secretly plan. Especially for someone as attentive as Kasey. She could look at you for half a second and know your mood. Not to mention she was as stubborn as an old mule. She puts her mind to something, there's no turning her around.

And that's the trouble with her. You never know whether she hates it or loves it until you see her eyes. Her eyes give almost everything away. The only way you know when she's lying is because her eyes get harder than stone.

Pan sighed through his nose, setting the candle down and sitting carefully. He really hoped she loved this. He wanted her to know that he would do nearly anything for her, that she didn't even have to ask.

Maybe, possibly, even die for her.

That annoying sound of tiny bells tore Pan from his thoughts. "Pan? Is it time?"

Pan struggled to control his breathing. "Yes." Man, he was a nervous wreck tonight!

"Do you want us to get her?"

"No. I've - I've got it."

"Sure?"

He glared at them. "Yes." The only reason he didn't kill that little thing where it floated was because Kasey loved the fairies. He didn't see how anyone could, but Kasey, he had found out a long time ago, was really weird that way. Pan shakily got to his feet and teleported to the camp site.

"Pan?" Kasey asked from a log several feet away. "You look awfully nervous. Are you all right?"

Oh, joy. This was going to be fun.

"Pan? You look awfully nervous. Are you all right?" I had just finished sharpening my sword when he appeared. It was almost dark - the day was, thankfully, almost over. Hopefully he didn't remember what that day was.

He smirked, but it didn't hide the fact that he was shaking a little. "Yes, no, everything is completely fine."

I raised a brow. That annoyed him, I could tell. "Come here," he growled, placing his hands on his hips.

I chuckled, sheathed my sword and walked over to him, stopping a foot away and crossing my arms over my chest. "Yes?"

His angry façade quickly went away as he sighed, now annoyed, and wrapped one arm around my waist, drawing me in closer. He pulled me against his chest and the other arm snaked around me. My arms went around his neck. Dang, he is sweaty.

"What, Peter Pan? I am almost done sharpening my sword and Mikah and Jonathan should be back any moment."

"They're already there." I could see him mentally slapping himself.

"Already where?"

"Where I'm about to take you. Now, won't you put on something a little more fancy so you don't look like a shrub?"

Another mental slap. "So I look like a shrub to you?"

"No - that's not what I meant -"

"All right," I interrupted, trying not to sound as angry as I was. "I'll go wash. And change. Maybe then I'll look like a pretty shrub," I added as an afterthought. I slipped out of his arms and went back to my tent, fishing an old yet clean shirt and pair of pants out of my backpack. As I turned to get the towel off my bed my gaze caught something black. And red. And silver. It was a red dress. And skinny black leather pants. And silver boots. And suddenly I didn't smell so bad, my hair was no longer on my shoulders, and I felt a cold breeze on my neck that made me shiver. My jaw was pretty much brushing the floor. But I snapped it shut when Pan suddenly walked in. "Aren't you going to change?" he asked innocently.

"Yes, but not in front of you."

"Or do you want me to just do it for you?"

I whipped around to face him, hands going to my hips and my brow raising. "Excuse me?"

"With magic," he said, shrugging. As if it was obvious.

I dropped my hands to my sides and lowered my brow into a frown. He still stared at me questioningly. "So...?"

"All right, fine." I paused. "How does that work?"

"Like this." He snapped his fingers and I felt a tingling sensation all over my body.

Suddenly I was no longer wearing dark jeans and a PTV t-shirt, I was wearing a red dress that went to my knees, tight black leather pants, and silver boots. The dress was a little more revealing than I thought it would be. The neck line went a little lower than I would have preferred, but not too low at the same time. I was a little bothered by the fact that it left my necklace in full view, but I quickly forgot about that. It had sleeves, but the sleeves were a little small. I could feel a cold wind on my back. The bottom reached a little above my knees. I was reaching around my back to try and see how big the hole was, but couldn't tell for sure. Pan cleared his throat and I turned to him, jumping when I saw a girl next to him. It took me a few seconds to realize that that girl was me.

Not an ounce of makeup on me, and yet I still looked absolutely gorgeous. My hair was wrapped into a messy bun atop my head, but it suited me perfectly. I turned to see the hole in the back of the dress and was relieved that it was only about four inches tall and four inches wide. The shape was like a square standing on one of its corners. I looked at Pan, who was just staring at me. His eyes kept going up and down my body.

I crossed my arms over my chest and raised an eyebrow. "What're you looking at?"

His gaze came up to meet mine and he blinked rapidly. The mirror next to him disappeared and he pulled his fingers through his hair. "Uh - n-nothing."

"That's funny," I smirked. "It looked a lot like you were checking me out."

He blushed. "Well, a man can't help checking out a beautiful girl, especially when she's his girlfriend."

Now it was my turn to blush. He bowed and held his hand out. "Shall we?" I did a little curtsy as I took his hand and he led me out of the tent. I followed him through the woods without any hesitation, but when I saw light ahead it made me pause. He looked back at me, confused, and I smiled a bit, but held on to his arm a bit tighter. That made him smirk.

"A bit nervous?"

"I hate surprises."

His hand came up to gently stroke my face. "I know."

I glared at him and his smirk widened. He dropped his hand and pulled me along. We emerged from the trees and I sucked in a tiny gasp.

Fairies and a few candles lit up the rather small clearing. Mikah and Jonathan stood in the middle, both looking freshly groomed and wearing fancy clothes and huge smiles, just like me. Except Mikah was holding something. At first I thought it was a small package, but as Pan dragged me closer I realized that it was a small cake. With my name. And the words "Happy" and "Birthday".
