I never doubted how smart I am. Never. So that's why I didn't doubt what I knew was true. But I doubted why the knowledge hurt.
"So what d'you think they're doing, Captain?" Jonathan asked nervously.
"I know what they're doing," I corrected. "And you really don't want to know."
His eyes widened, and then I saw something behind him. Movement. I looked behind his head, then scoffed, and began poking the fire again. His head whipped into that direction. Mikah and Pan were back, and Mikah looked like she had just found the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. Pan just looked the same as before, except maybe a little less angry. Jonathan went straight to Mikah, who was staring, in awe, at Pan. I continued to poke at the fire as he sauntered by and didn't look as he walked away. I felt his eyes on me and heard him growl as he walked behind me, but it only made me smirk as I stared into the fire.
After we had all gotten our food I made everyone stop, just before we started eating, to make an announcement. "We're gonna party tonight," I said bluntly as I stood up. I saw light go into everyone's eyes, and I smiled. "And I'm gonna introduce you to some music. Not just any music, mind you; This music is from my realm, possibly the only realm with good music - no offense." This earned a nervous chuckle. "I'll start out slow, don't worry. A calm song or two - but then we'll get into the better music." I smirked. "My music. Just, uh," I stepped off the log, "let me go get my stereo. Don't - go anywhere."
I sprinted off to my tent and picked my stereo up carefully. "Don't strain yourself," said a familiar voice.
I smirked. "Done it before. Don't need your help." I turned around to see Pan coming towards me, trying to take it from me. I stepped away. "I don't need your help," I growled through my teeth.
He smirked, dropping his arms for a moment. "A high girl once told me you don't need an invitation to help someone." Then my stereo was no longer in my hands. And it was leaving my tent.
"That's not what I said!" I snapped, trailing after him. "And I wasn't high!" He chuckled and continued with my stereo.
Pan brought the stereo to the place I had been standing in front of the fire and set it carefully on a big, flat rock beside it. "Thanks," I said, crouching next to it. "Even if I didn't ask you for help." He just shook his head and went back to stand behind everyone else.
I stood up on the log again and held up my iPod. "This is called an iPod, for those who don't know. It's where I hold all of my music. Now, earlier today, while everyone was gone and I was bored to tears, I put a special playlist together just for this party. And before I put the music on, I'd like to start with a kind of History lesson for you children." I heard Mikah groan and she looked at Pan, a strange look in her eye, but he paid no attention to her. All his focus was on me. I almost took time out of my lecture just to mention it. "There's all kinds of music. There's classic, swing, hard rock, alternative - my personal favorite - metal, instrumental, and tons more. But they all came from one thing. Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, Elvis, big famous guys like that. No music from my world would have been there without them. So, if you want to thank anyone for this... awesome, and... out-of-this-world music, thank them. But, anyways, as I was saying. You're not used to my kind of music. So we'll start out with something a little... calm, I guess. Actually, it's the quietest and calmest song I have. In my case, it's a one-of-a-kind type of thing. And one reason I love it so much, is because it's about this island." A look of confusion passed over everyone's face, even Pan's just a bit. "It's called Lost Boy - and it's written by a woman named Ruth B. That sounds like a good place to start." I turned on my iPod and hooked it up again before selecting it and turning the stereo up as needed. The song came out slow and steady, and I couldn't help but mouth the words as they came through.
