Prologue
“Jaydennnn!!” my five year old self screamed “Put me down!” I pounded his back with my tiny fists.
Six year old Jayden just laughed as he kept me in my place, slung over his shoulder. My head hit his back with every step. I was over at my best friend, Becky’s, house but that also means that I have to deal with her brother, Jayden, as well.
“Oh look is that a swimming pool I see!” Jayden taunted
I screamed louder and started to kick my legs as I finally realised what he was going to do. His steps got faster as we got closer and closer to the pool.
“Whoopsie” he said, and I felt myself fly through the air and land in a pool full of freezing cold water, it was winter making it ten times colder.
As I resurfaced choking, losing my glasses in the process. “Maybe that will rinse off some of the ugliness” Jayden sneered and then walked away.
I saw Becky run over to me as she came out the house, pushing Jayden in the process. She put her hand in the water and helped to pull me out. With a little struggle I managed to get out, I was shivering all over.
“Come on let’s get you indoors” Becky said as she wrapped her arms around me
I was glaring at Jayden’s retreating figure “I hate him” I spat out.
But I didn’t. I couldn’t. I was in love with him and I couldn’t help it. No matter what he did to me, my heart would always stay with him. Becky doesn’t know. No one knows.
That memory came shooting back to me as seventeen year old me sat on the ledge of the pool with my feet dipping into it. It was summer now so the water was cooling on my hot feet.
Jayden had always been horrible to me. Insulting the way I look every day. Becky tells him off or hits him every time he insults me but nothing can change my ugliness. I’d have to have a face transplant to do that.
I was extremely plain with dirty blonde hair that hung limply around my shoulders. I had glasses which didn’t help and never wore make up as it wouldn’t hide my ugly face anyway. I always wore baggy clothes, I had a nice figure but I didn’t wear anything revealing as no one would appreciate me anyway. Why bother when no one looked?
No guys ever looked my way. Their eyes were always on Becky as she was beautiful, just like Jayden, with her long brown hair and delicate facial features. Jayden also had the brown hair but his was cut into a sweeping fringe that compliments his face nicely.
Suddenly, I felt someone push me from behind causing me to fall head first into the pool. Water engulfed me as I kicked my way back up to the top. I gasped for air as I reached the pool surface.
Jayden was looking down at me with a smirk on his face as his friends, Ben and Aiden, were laughing behind him. “This looks an awfully familiar scene. A bit of déjà vu I think” he said as I glared at him “It still didn’t rinse off your ugliness though” Jayden shivered with disgust.
I felt like crying but I held the tears in so I didn’t give him the satisfaction. I was extremely angry as I swam over to the edge and pulled myself out.
“Where you going Lacey, afraid of the big bad boys” he said the last bit in a girly voice.
I ignored him as I stormed past him; he caught my arm before I could get any further. He leant in; he was really close causing me to stiffen. His breath tickled my ears causing me to shiver a little. “Nice bra by the way” he whispered and then started laughing.
I blushed madly as I realised I was wearing a white t-shirt with a red bra. I ran into Becky’s house, thoughts swirling in my head. I was fed up. Fed up with being the boring girl that everyone picked on.
I jumped in my car, not caring about my t-shirt anymore. I had my credit card, courtesy of my parents, in my purse as I raced my way down the road towards the mall. Shopping time I think, maybe a trip to the hairdressers and opticians in the process.
Watch out Jayden, you’re not going to know what hit you. I’m not going to be ‘little’ Lacey anymore.
