Chapter 18
We were all sat around the dining room table that evening. Me, Jayden, Becky, Jamie, mom and dad. I finally l plucked up the courage to ask mom and dad about us being adopted so it’s better late than never right?
“What’s the meeting for then?” dad asked, looking curious
At that point all I could remember was the time when they both came home and saw Jamie for the first time. I thought my reaction was dramatic but mom’s was way too over the top.
*Flashback*
“Kids! We’re home!” we all heard Jayden’s dad say as we were all sitting in the front room.
Jamie looked a bit nervous as he hadn’t seen mom and dad for 5 years. To be honest, I just couldn’t wait for mom’s reaction
“Lacey! Ah there you are-“ mom was cut off when we all turned and she noticed Jamie sat on the sofa for the first time.
She was like a goldfish. Mouth open. Mouth close. Mouth open. You get the drift. I stifled a laugh at mom’s face.
“J-Jam-CHRIS! GET HERE NOW!” she shouted to my dad
Dad came rushing around corner and so did all the other adults “What? Is there something wrong with Lacey?”
His eyes were focused on mom’s face so he followed her line of vision and saw Jamie.
“Sup dad, long time no see!” Jamie chirped happily
“Oh dear lord!” mom said, but the next bit was the best. She placed the back of her hand onto her forehead and gracefully fainted into dad’s arms, of course. Mom had always been a bit dramatic.
I burst out laughing then and everyone joined in with me. They all knew what my mom was like so they didn’t need to be alarmed.
Dad placed mom on the sofa and turned to Jamie “Son, I think we need a chat”
Sat at the dining room table I chuckled to myself. Jayden raised his eyebrow to me.
“Sorry, nothing. Carry on” I waved them off
“Like I just said, what’s the meeting for son?” dad asked again
“We found our adoption papers” I whispered
“Well I did, that’s why I’ve been gone for the last 5 years, not because I hated this house like I told you” Jamie muttered and looked down to the table. Becky placed a comforting hand over his.
Mom sighed and placed her head in her hands “you weren’t adopted by us, we put you up for adoption” a tear fell down mom’s cheek
“What?” I demanded
“What your mother is trying to say was that we were in a low place and couldn’t look after you anymore so we put you up for adoption” dad said
Jamie was frowning and so was everyone else “I don’t understand”
Dad continued “after you were born Lacey, I lost my job so we had very little money. It got so bad that I could hardly keep the house. We didn’t want you to be brought up in a broken home so we thought we’d give you a better life were you could be happy and live a good life” mom’s tears were streaming now
“We left you with this lovely lady called Kaylee who had a slim chance of having children so she was thrilled when the adoption went smoothly” mom carried on
“But how did we end up back here?” I asked
“A distant family member of mine died and left me with a lot of money. We both missed you two so much and realised that it was a stupid idea to get you adopted just because we had money issues. As long as you were loved, it should have been enough so we got you back. You were only gone a couple of months so we thought it wouldn’t make a difference” dad explained
“Hang on, I searched down Kaylee and she said that she was our real mom” Jamie said frustrated
“Honestly honey, she must have been lying. We are your real parents, you can do a DNA if you’re that unsure” mom winced
“Maybe she was so upset that she couldn’t have children that she wanted you to be hers. She could’ve gone a little crazy from having you taken away as well.” Jayden offered
“She’s got Jack now though” Becky frowned
“God know what was going on in that women’s mind” Jamie sighed
“You get some weird people these days” I muttered
