"No!" I screamed. There was Mitch, in a statue pose, wrapped in an orange layer of web-like flame. "You made him a trophy!"

"I did." Heat said. "And you should be glad. He was a threat to all of us."

"No..." I whispered, falling to my knees. I buried my head in my hands and cried into them. "No... he wasn't..."

"He almost killed you!" Heat shouted. "It was for the best!"

"No, it fucking wasn't!" I sobbed into my hands. "I love him... and you just... you took him away from me."

"You cannot love a mortal." Heat said. And he left. He just... left.

"I will deal with you later," Zima growled to him as he left. Then she ran forward and touched Mitch's arm. She flinched and brought her hand away. "Kirstin, come here child. There isn't much time."

That was the first time she had called me Kirstin sense I'd become an Elemental. She only said that when she was trying to be soft with me. It must've been bad if she called me Kirstin.

I stood and ran forward. "What do I do, Zima?" I asked, trying to ignore the tears burning into my flesh as they froze.

"Wrap him in ice." She said. "Thin ice, very thin. Just to cool the flames. They will not burn into his skin if you apply the cold."

"That doesn't seem right..." I whispered.

"Kirstin, if you want to save your friend, you must do as I say."

I sniffled and shot a thin blast of sparkling ice from my finger. It wrapped around Mitch and made a crackling sound as it froze against the flames. Zima began muttering under her breath, some form of ancient language. Mitch began to move. And then he collapsed on the bed. The element residue was gone, but his skin was pink and raw in some places, and black and burned in others. I began to run forward, but Zima stopped me. "No, child. We must turn him if he is to live. There is no other way."

"Turn him?"

"Into an Elemental."
