Chapter 28
This. Was. Terrible. I couldn't find it! Not anywhere in this Goddamn castle! I had looking in every class room I sat in, every hallway I circulated in. My engagement ring was nowhere to be found. And the Potter Day Ball was tomorrow.
It was an absolute nightmare!
I casted the accio spell a little everywhere, it was look far to come to me. The only place it could possibly be was up the Astronomy tower. And since I hadn't been to class in a while, it had to be in John's office. Or his bed room.
Oh and I almost forget... I cheated on Ron! More than I ever did before. I told Harry I wasn't sleeping with him and four days later, I did! I was a horrible person. I don't know what happened. One second, I'm raging at the man that ruined everything, the other, I'm in bed with him.
I really hated myself right then.
But I needed the ring back, so I went to the Astronomy tower for class on Friday night. He seemed happy to see I was present in his class again, as if everything was good between us again. As if I didn't run out of his bedroom, ashamed and crying, the moment I came back to my senses.
The duration of the lesson was excruciatingly long. I didn't dare take my nose out of my books until he announced that it was over.
"Goodnight and see you all at the Ball tomorrow!" he said cheerfully.
The students all left in a hurry to find the Gryffindor common room. When Ginny stopped next to the door to wait for me, I gestured that she go on. She shrugged and left with the others.
John had obviously pretended not to notice I was still there until I cleared my throat to get his attention, standing in front of his desk. He looked up at me and smiled.
"Doesn't this remind you of something? When you pretended not to understand to spend more time with me? Seems like forever ago now," he said.
"Yeah, it does..." I admitted, looking down at my hands.
The thought of that day made a smile creep up on me. But I had to stay focus, not to let him get to me again!
"John, I think I lost my engagement ring in your office. Do you mind if I check?"
"No need."
He slipped his hand into his jacket pocket and places the diamond ring on the desk. I found it difficult to look at. All the lies and truths untold that were going to be in that marriage... I quickly took it and shoved it into my own pocket.
"Thank you," I said stiffly.
I was about to turn around and leave, promising myself to never come back, when he asked a question I wasn't expecting.
"Do you love me, Hermione?"
I gazed at him, confused. From what I had said the other night, I thought he knew the answer to that.
"What do you think?" I replied a little harshly.
"I think..." he spoke slowly, but surely, "that you do. And you feel pressured by everyone else to be with Ron, but you know you could never truly be happy with him. And you hate that you love me, because you think everything would be so much simpler if you didn't, but the truth is, I'm not that one destroying your relationship, Hermione. The fact that you too are just not right for each other is. Am I wrong?"
I felt like he was looking right through me, as if his eyes were x-rays. And I was also insulted by what it said. Being analyzed as such bothered me greatly.
"Go to Hell," I snapped.
"You asked what I thought, I simply answered," he replied wittily.
And with that, I stormed out of the classroom, slamming the door behind me.
