Lights were strung from house to house , beautiful twinkly white lights that made the whole street look like a glittery wonderland. People were already starting to mingle and many BBQ's were lined along the sidewalks. I was surprised at how much diversity their were in ages. There were loads of small children, teenagers, old people and from all walks of life and ethnicities. Here I thought only old people lived on this street. It also occurred to me how much alcohol was being freely passed around and shared. Lucky Aggy brought a 24 of Molson Canadian cans so I helped myself to one and cracked it open. It still felt weird being able to legally drink alcohol. My nineteenth birthday was two weeks ago and but I still feel like i'm underage and trying to sneak it.
I started walking slowly behind my family just taking in all the sights, sipping my beer and fiddling with my dress a bit. Then I noticed the "crowd". It was a bunch of guys and girls probably my age maybe a few younger a few older than me. They were all sipping - well some chugging back beers and shots and bopping along to the music that was pumping through the near by speakers and moving through the neon lights that were shining down on them. The girls all looked like sluts and were grinding on some of the guys. I rolled my eyes.
Then I noticed Hottie Mcneighbour in the middle chugging back his vodka cooler and dancing crazily alone in the middle of the crowd. I laughed to myself. He had a few buddies beside him who were dancing with some of the girls, but he was just doing his own thing.
I finished off my beer and cracked open another one to help pass the time. I had sat down at a small picnic table with my relatives and was still watching the crowd by the speakers who were dancing, then Hottie started to stumble over towards us. I started to panic, he was headed straight for our table. I squirmed in my seat uneasy. He made his way through the last bit of crowd and dragged the empty seat that was beside me out and sat on it backwards with his legs through the back of the chair and his arms resting on top, fresh cooler in hand. At first he said nothing. Just starred at me. Then he took a sip from his bottle, eyes never looking away. When he was satisfied with his gulp he made a loud "ahhhhhhh" sound. Then he spoke. "Hey Hottie" he slurred. "I'ts Huddy" I retorted. "Oh I know your name, but I prefer hottie. By the way i'm Craig." He said. I didn't respond. No guy had ever called me anything close to hot, I took it as some kind of sick joke and looked away, taking a sip of my beer - I was starting to feel its effects. "So....." Craig started again "what bring you to old Saskamagina, other then your Grandmother." He asked. I choked on my beer a bit when he said "Saskamagina" and tried to find a reasonable answer for him. "Well..."
I started "really not much else. I took the year off cuse' I just graduated and wanted to spend time with my Grandmother, take care of her and stuff after her hip surgery. She hadn't seen her sister in a long time so I thought it would be nice to visit over the summer. Plus I haven't been here since I was 11 so." I thought that I rambled to much. Probably more information than he wanted. He took another swig of vodka and placed the now empty bottle on the picnic table. " so will you only be spending time with your Grandma while your here?" He asked placing his fist under his strong jaw, clenching it closed. He was hammered. I wondered how he could even talk. Then he stood up from the chair. I looked over to my Grandmother after to know what she ways thinking with Craig here till I noticed she wasn't sitting their. I frantically looked around the party for her, scanning the street with my eyes. Then I spotted her - she was off with Aggy and uncle Gordo on the dance floor. "Jesus" I thought. "Come on" Craig said, my head snapped around. He was giving me his hand "they won't miss ya" he was standing above me, his right hand sticking out waiting for mine. Craig was cute, but I was nervous to go with him I hardly knew the guy. I took the last swig of my beer and reluctantly took his hand.He lead me through the groups of people grabbed a few more bottles of vodka and handed one to me. I had just un twisted the cap when I noticed that we were standing in the "crowd". Craig was still lightly holding the tips of my fingers as he pulled me threw the crowd till we came to the back of the group where only a few people where dancing. I took another sip of my Vodka cooler. Craig was just finishing off his. I had mine in my hand and he took it and put it on a table close to us. "I wasn't finished" I said protesting. "Too bad, your going to dance with me" then he grabbed both my hands and started twirling me around. Our bodies brushed against each other and I could feel his warmth. The song was pretty up beat but Craig started to slow down. Then he placed his hand on my hip. I internally squirmed at the feeling. Now we were slow dancing like old couples did. Lucky enough just at the moment the song changed to a slow one and everyone around us started pairing off also. "How'd you know it was going to be a slow song" I asked, a little more slurred than previous. Craig smiled. "Can't tell you, its a secret" I huffed, slightly annoyed. In that instant Craig pulled me closer, this time spinning me and wrapping his strong arm around my full waist.
We didn't really speak much, we only danced like that for what seemed like hours only breaking to get more liquor. By 1:30 am I had taken 3 shots and drank way to many vodka coolers. Me and Craig were the last few people left on the street. Gams was no where in sight, but I honestly didn't even care. Craig and I started walking back towards our cottages around 2. He actually walked me right to my guest house. "This all for you?" He stammered, gesturing to the guest house. "Um yeah, Aggy let me stay here to give me some space if I needed it"
I said back. I was standing on the little porch and Craig was on the ground, now our heights were level. "Hottie I had a great time tonight" he said putting a heavy hand on my shoulder. "Me too, thanks for coming over to me you really didn't have t-" he cut me off as he started to lean in for a kiss, but then I swayed too much as I was unstable in my heels and he tripped on the step to the porch and we ended up tumbling to the ground, him falling on top of me.His face was now right overtop of mine, his solid body laying on top of me, our legs intertwined. He propped himself up onto his elbows and I raised my head confused. Then I felt his soft lips brush against mine, he was gentile. We started to sit up as he placed his hands on my cheeks. Then he kissed me.
The kiss was like falling asleep. Slowly, then all at once. It was passionate as we introduced our tongues to each other. He moved his hands to the back of my neck so only his thumbs were on my cheeks and as we kissed he rubbed them back and forth across my jawline. I had one hand supporting me,
My nails dug into the wooden porch and my other hand was slung around his neck, my fingers weaved through his wavy strands of sand coloured hair. We slowly pulled away after minutes, and stammered to our feet. "night Huddy" he said smiling all goofy, his hair sticking out everywhere. "night Craig" I said gently letting go of his strong hands. That was our conversation before he stumbled down my porch and riffled through the tree line to get to his house, and I stumbled into my cottage smiling like a drunken idiot.
