I knew exactly what was happening, all the noises coming from downstairs as I lied in my bed. But I couldn't force myself to get up and go see. All the sounds; the shattering of glass on the ground, my mother's crying, I couldn't make out the things my father was saying to her. I didn't understand how he could make her cry so much, it hasn't even been an hour yet and she's crying; it's a new record for them. Every day I have to deal with this, unless dad's on one of his business trips then Mom and I get a break from it all. Yet every time he comes home it's like world war three is beginning in our living room. I was afraid to walk down the hall to see what had been broken this time.
As I slowly tried to ease my legs down the stairs I saw the glass surrounding the floor with my mother trying to clean it up with her hands. I could see she was bleeding as the tan carpet soaked up her blood. When I looked at dad he was quiet, soundly snoring on his Lazy boy chair with a Jack Daniels beside him. I quickly went into the kitchen and grabbed our hand-held vacuum off of the counter. When I came in mom had silent tears falling down her face, I know not to say anything when she's like this but sometimes she just needs me to say something. I couldn't find the words tonight to say anything so as quietly as I could I wrapped my arms around her shoulders and held her against me. The sob erupted from within her and I held her as she cried. There are people who just need it sometimes; my mom is one of those people.
I warned her to quiet down in fear of waking daddy but she couldn't control herself. I quickly rushed her up the stairs to the bathroom to clean off her hands that had glass stuck in them sticking out in different directions. After I cleaned her hands I pulled her into my room and laid her underneath the covers handing her a pillow so she would have something to hold onto until I came back. As I left the room I quietly whispered "I love you." to her so she would know that until I came back.
When I came downstairs dad's snoring was much louder meaning his sleep had lightened. I had to be as quiet as possible or I might be the one dealing with his wrath. As the vacuum ran I heard his snoring get lighter meaning he was sleeping deeper than before. When most of the glass was cleaned up I moved onto the bigger pieces and felt the silent tears fall down my face as I saw my mother's blood on the carpet. I needed to go and get the carpet cleaner but I couldn't help myself from stopping and staring at it. The tears just fell as I cleaned it off the floor on the already bloody rag. I cried quietly hoping that if my father were to wake up he wouldn't notice it. That's when I heard the small voice of my younger brother behind me.
"Jordan?" I heard his six year-old voice coming up behind me.
"Chris don't come in, there's glass on the-"my voice was cut off by a cry from him. I quickly grabbed him ignoring the blood now coming from my feet and pulled him upstairs to the bathroom and quickly shut the door hoping not to hear the voice of our father.
"Chris, I told you not to come in." I whispered sitting him on the toilet as he cried. "I'm going to go get Mommy ok, stay right here and try not to be loud; I'll be back in less than 2 minutes ok?"
He nodded his head as tears fell down his face, I could tell he wanted to yell but he knows that right now I'm serious. I gave him one last look and quickly came into my room to try and wake up my mom.
"Mommy? Mom I need you please wake up." I said quietly shaking her shoulder.
"What? What is it?" She said opening her eyes a little.
"Chris came downstairs before I finished cleaning and stepped on some glass. He needs you right now mom, I need you or he's going to wake up dad." I said half begging her to get up.
"Alright where is he?" She said opening her eyes and getting out of bed.
"Follow me." I said taking her hand and pulling her to the bathroom where we could hear Chris crying and getting louder.
I opened the door as quietly as I could already hearing dad's snore grow louder.
"Chris, I really need you to be as quiet as possible." Mom said trying to calm him. She pulled him into her arms and rocked him a little as she rubbed his back.
He got a litter quieter but I knew it wasn't going to last long. I had to get the glass out of his feet and keep him quiet.
"Now Chris," I said as I pulled out the tweezers, "I really need you to be quiet as I do this. It's going to hurt and you are going to want to be loud and cry but if daddy wakes up we might have a bigger problem than we want."
"Jordan, are you bleeding?" I heard mom say looking at my feet.
A small puddle of blood had built up around my feet as I let the glass sink deeper into my skin.
"I had to get him off the glass and out of the room before dad woke up mommy, he was more important at the time."
"Jordan you need to stop standing on it, now." Mom said firmly reaching towards me.
"I know mom but I need to clean up the blood first." I quickly grabbed the toilet paper and cleaned up the floor then sat down and looked at my feet. The glass was actually in pretty deep, I needed stitches for many of the cuts but right now Chris was more important.
I quickly went to work over his feet and after I got the first one out a shout escaped his lips.
"Chris, look at me." I said pulling his tear stained face to look me in the eye. "Can you do something for your big sister? I'll take you out for ice cream in the morning if you can do it."
He nodded as I brought the tweezers to his feet.
"Now Chris, it's going to hurt but I really need you to be quiet." I said as I put the tweezers on the first one.
"Yes Jordan." He said holding mommy's hand and burying his face in her chest.
As I pulled on the first one and immediately Chris let out a whimper of pain. I saw more blood come and quickly grabbed more toilet paper as I pulled it out more. When the first one was finally out half of it was drenched in blood.
"Jordan, do you need stitches for those?" My mom said as she saw the blood that had puddled around my feet.
"I'll be ok Mom; we need to worry about Chris right now ok?"
"How deep are they?" She said pulling his foot towards her face.
"His aren't that deep mommy right now just worry about him please?" I half begged as she looked at the blood on my foot.
"No, you're bleeding out go get in the car right now; walk on your tip toes so you don't wake up your father."
I opened the door defeated as I walked down the stairs to get the car keys for mom. She came up behind me with my jacket and wrapped it around me as she took the keys from my hand. When we got into the car I was afraid of how loud it is, it could wake up dad.
As she put Chris in the back I quietly got in beside him and held him as mom put the car in reverse. As we started to drive away I saw a light out of the corner of my eye, the door opened. Daddy was awake.
