"Do you really mean it? You're moving to the same town as me?" Gabby's eager voice floated through the phone; the news exciting her. Her actual name was Gabriella, but seeing as how she hated it you nicknamed her Gabby.
Gabby was your favourite internet friend; the white-haired, slightly-freckled girl being the best company you could ever ask for. She was
soft-spoken, strangely sassy and generous - but insult her and you'd see how sharp her tongue can get. She was the only friend you Skyped and chatted with daily, the others merely pleasant ways to pass the time. You spent most of your life on your laptop - working from home as you designed digital art for companies and online book covers for new writers, making a rather large amount of money. But you weren't the type of girl to go around showing off, instead you chose to save it for a rainy day or something of that nature. Gabby worked as an online artist, her outstanding skill making her work sell almost effortlessly whilst she enjoyed every minute of it.
You were very excited to move to Haddonfield; a quiet little town in Illinois where you'd finally meet your internet bestie. Your mother was heavily against moving anywhere, but you were 25 now - you weren't going to get babied any further. How could Haddonfield be so bad anyway? It seemed like a peaceful place to live in - and on the plus side Gabby lived there too! So your mind was set; you were moving there.
"Yes! I'm making the move on Friday - to the house opposite yours." You answered in a cheerful tone, holding your phone against your ear as you sat on your bed.
"I can't wait to meet you. The design work you do really is excellent." Gabby wistfully spoke.
"I can't wait to meet you either! Your online art is amazing!" You complimented back in glee and rolled onto your front, your legs in the air.
"I have to warn you though, Haddonfield is quite the quiet town. No casinos, no huge parties, no raves - Haddonfield's kind of dull if you're into that sort of thing. I mean, it has an arcade, and a club...I think." She mused lightly, painting the picture of a peaceful place in your head.
"It sounds fine, I'd rather avoid human interaction as much as could if I'm honest." You dryly remarked and she laughed; agreeing with you.
"I'm so happy you're moving here, honestly. You're the only friend I really have. I don't have many online ones either." Gabby sounded woeful as she spoke the truth, reminding you of what had happened to her.
Gabby used to have tons and tons of internet friends, each of them clamouring for her attention and wanting her to draw characters for them. But when she'd done what they asked, they lied and pretended they had done the art themselves. Even though they'd been caught and exposed, Gabby never really trusted anyone until she met you. The two of you had just clicked; chatting about art, anime, anything under the sun!
"I have a couple here, but they had to pass the friendship test first." You responded in a disgruntled manner, trying not to sound too annoyed.
"Friendship...test...?" Gabby repeated blankly.
"Some dumb idea my mom came up with. She said it was because I'd made a bad friend once, and that she wouldn't make the same mistake again. So I humoured her." You explained as best you could but the whole thing was ridiculous.
"I...see. I hope I passed it." Gabby chuckled; trying to lighten the mood.
"She didn't do the friendship test on you. I refused to let her know anything about you that was too personal. She really should keep her nose out of my business." You huffed haughtily - your mother's paranoia getting on your nerves.
