Trigger Warning: Cancer
The team had just gotten back from a mission. Everyone was stressed and exhausted from the failure. Lance, who normally lightens the mood, went straight to his room after putting up his armor. Unknown to the others, he was barely able to stand. He was weaker than he let on and no amount of training could fix that.
The blue paladin collapsed on his bed and sighed. He ran a hand through his hair and closed his eyes as he felt some get caught in his fingers. He looked at his hand and stared at the strands of hair. He got up and went into the bathroom that's connected to his room.
Standing in front of the mirror, Lance felt silent tears run down his face. His bones jutted out and his hair was thinning. His face was sunken in and his skin had faded a few shades lighter than normal.
When Lance was thirteen, he was diagnosed with ALL leukaemia. The cancer was in his bone marrow. Everyone thought it was the end for the young Cuban. He was put on chemo as a last resort. He spent months in the hospital until he was deemed cancer free. They put him on less intense chemo and was able to go home.
The freedom didn't last long though. Around a year later, Lance collapsed while playing soccer with his nephews. The cancer had returned but being a little older, he refused to go through the same chemotherapy again. He still was on chemo, just not as intense as the first time. His family tried to convince him otherwise but he applied for the Galaxy Garrison and left them. He was going to die anyways so why not live the rest of his life to the fullest?
Although, he hadn't been planning on being part of voltron. It was fun, he got to see space and explore other solar systems. But he knew he would never see his family or Earth ever again. Even if they win the war and could go home, Lance would never last that long.
He no longer had the chemo pills so the only thing left was for him to wait as the cancer slowly killed him. The others still had no idea. Everyone was so busy and stressed that they didn't notice how sickly the blue paladin looked. He didn't blame them though, appearances don't matter when you're fighting in a war. Lance felt no need to inform the others. He would hopefully die on a mission and they wouldn't need to feel guilty for not noticing the illness.
The alarm sounded through the castle, signaling that it was dinner time. Lance sighed as he walked down the halls. He barely had much of an appetite anymore and when he did eat, he just threw it up anyways. Not the best thing when you're fighting in a war.
He got in his lion and joined the others outside the castle. Red kept telling him it wasn't a good idea to fight so hard but Lance shrugged him off.
"Paladins, you need to protect the planet that the Galra is surrounding," Coran informed them.
They split up, Allura and Keith were fighting off incoming ships, while Lance, Hunk, and Pidge took out the surrounding ones.
Halfway through the fight, Lance saw Pidge about to get hit by another ship. He knocked her out of the way and got hit. The laser wasn't very powerful but it was enough to hurt.
Once it was over, the ruler of the planet invited the paladins to stay for a party to celebrate their victory.
While the others were inside with the aliens, Lance decided to take a walk outside.
The planet was beautiful. It had lakes with orange tinted water and pink skies. Red plants littered the landscape along with green flowers.
Lance sat down by the edge of the water and closed his eyes. He could hear the ripples in the water and insects buzzing. The air was nice and cool with a faint breeze that swayed his hair.
He laid down and stared at the sky. He felt tired, maybe a nap would be nice. He couldn't wait to tell everyone on Earth of such amazing planets.
It's a shame he never made it.
But it was unreal to experience such wonders. The others didn't learn of their friend until hours later, when the sun had set. Maybe if they stuck around he wouldn't have been alone.
After all, why be inside on such a beautiful day?
A/N: I'm sorry this one is short and crappy! Sorry if I got any information wrong. My dad had leukaemia a few years ago and I don't really remember all of the accurate information since it all passed in a blur. But I hope you guys are having a good day/night.
