TW: ABUSE
The war was over. After two years they were returning to Earth. Everyone was happy. Pidge and Matt were going to see their mom who was left alone. Hunk was going to see his family. Shiro was going to return to the Garrison. Keith was going to travel. And Lance, the one everyone though would be the most excited, was unusually quiet.
"Hey, you okay? You get to finally see your family again!" Pidge mentioned.
"Um yeah, it just hasn't sunk in with me yet," he replied with a fake smile.
The truth was, he was dreading it. He avoided thinking of home because he convinced himself he would never return. He was scared for his family. He only went to the Garrison because his siblings told him to. But he wasn't supposed to be gone this long.
Lance's past isn't the amazing perfect background that he told everyone. His mom would come home drunk and raging almost every night. His dad has died when Lance was nine, so no one could protect them.
Lance's mom had just walked in the front door, reeking of alcohol. Lance rushed to shove his siblings into a closet in one of their bedrooms. He didn't want them getting hurt. He was the oldest and felt the need to protect his siblings.
"Where are you little shits?!"
Lance ran out and into the hallway. He didn't want his mom to find the others. She had been drinking like this a few years after his father's death.
"Here, mom," Lance said timidly.
"Where are the others?
"At a friend's house."
"And you didn't ask me first?! Do you have dinner done?"
"I-I made chicken alfredo."
"Seriously?! We had that last week! You can't go buy something better? You're fourteen now! Get a fucking job already! You're so useless!"
Lance's mother walked up to him and swung her purse at his face. The sudden force was enough to take Lance to the ground. He covered his head as she continued to hit him with the bag. After she had gotten her anger out, she went upstairs to her room. After fifteen minutes, Lance could hear her snoring. He got up from the floor and let the others out of the closet.
Lance was packing his stuff up in his room. They were going to drop him off first. He was hoping they wouldn't want to meet his family. He sighed and heard Allura speaking over the coms.
"Paladins we're at Lance's home."
Blue was going with Lance so he could communicate with the others whenever he wanted. He put on his jacket and went out to the hanger.
"So who else is coming to see my amazing family?" Lance asked, still trying to put on the act.
There were excited replies and a grunt from Keith.
They reached the town and landed the blue and black lions. The others were in Black. They all got out and started walking, Lance leading. Lance was nervously messing with his fingers and tugging at the sleeves of his jacket. He was hoping his mother wasn't drunk. He was hoping his siblings weren't covered in bruises. But he knew the truth. The others weren't going to meet the happy family they were expecting.
He hesitated when he turned onto a familiar driveway. He took a deep breath as he walked up to the door. He rang the doorbell and waited. He heard a yell, then running. The door opened and there stood a teenager with wide eyes.
"Lance?"
Lance smiled softly.
"Oh my god, Lance!"
His brother jumped into Lance's arms and hugged him tight. Two others came running and joined the hug. Lance pulled away and looked at them. They had bruises on their faces and arms. He pulled them into another hug, tears welling in his eyes.
"I'm sorry. I'm so sorry I left you guys."
When they heard those words they started telling him everything was fine.
The team assumes he meant leaving Earth. They heard an angry yell from inside the house.
"Lance?!"
The kids jumped and ran behind Lance who stood in front of them in a protective manner. Now the team was really confused.
A woman came stumbling out of the house. "After all these years, look who showed up."
"Fuck off. I'm calling the police and reporting you like I should have done long ago. I'm taking my siblings and getting the hell away from you."
"Oh look, the useless runaway found some confidence. Took you long enough."
Lance glared at her. She lunged forwards to try to hit him but he caught her fist in his hang and threw her to the ground. She fell unconscious when her head hit the cement. Lance's siblings cheered and hugged him tight.
He turned to his team, who seemed, shocked, confused, and weary.
A sad smile graced Lance's face.
"I'm sorry I lied."
