Chapter 4
The Fall
As her power grew stronger, Elsa lost control. She receded less into dreams and fantasy, and more into fear and isolation. She found no one at her side, more so after her parents departed from her world. She had feared them leaving the castle. And now her fear was confirmed; they were lost at sea. Elsa had no one left.
She felt this lonliness at it’s most extreme when Anna came, as she always would. Every sob she heard on the other side of the door tore her more completely apart. As her cheeks grew more cold with tears, she looked up. Icicles grew from the corners of the room, pressing dangerously closer toward her. She felt trapped. No one could help her.
Elsa tingled at the shoulders, a numbing coldness. She was cold in emotion. Hours she realized had passed, and her eyes could shed no more tears. Aching on the inside and out, Elsa rose up from the door. Her body felt heavy, especially near her heart. She stepped sluggishly around the pile of frozen ice on the ground. Had they came from the tears she had shed, or the ice that grew around her like a cage? She sidestepped to avoid bumping into a sharp edge. She followed a path clear of ice, until she came to her window. Ice covered the glass, though outside she knew it was not snowing.
Elsa stiffly grabbed a blanket. She began the task of wiping away the little crystals that stuck to the glass. She rubbed it so hard, her hand began to hurt. But the hurt encouraged her actions; she scrubbed and scrubbed, but the ice kept coming back.
Why can’t I control this??
She helplessly scrubbed more, until she had left a decent space of clean glass. That’s when it came; a line of frost that wove around the top of the glass. When it was done forming, there was left a heart. The shape seemed so unfamiliar to her, yet she understood what it meant. Love.
Elsa angrily wiped that away as well, hitting the glass with a thud. From the sound of the unused hinges creaking she could tell it had opened. More anger and fear crawled through her veins. She rushed to go close it before anyone noticed a snowflake falling, but as she stood up looked outside.
She was standing on the ledge, eyes scanning the grassy field below. The window creaked open a bit more.
“What if I finally could just… End it all?”
Elsa paused, her cold eyes looking toward the horizon.
“What if I just took a leap of faith…”
Ice fell from the window and into the grass below.
“Could I finally be home with my parents? Could I be at peace, and not hurt anyone anymore?”
No response came from the emptiness of night outside. Only the crickets could be heard in the distance, echoing cries to no one. Elsa leaned forward, letting her self hang only by her arms from the windowsill. She felt a cool wind hit her face.
But what about Anna?
Anna couldn’t take another death. She also wasn’t ready for the throne. It would be a couple years until she was ready; not now. Elsa throwing herself off the ledge would hurt Anna more than anything Elsa didn’t say or do anymore. She just didn’t want Anna to be hurt.
Elsa pulled back her arms, ready to step back into the room. She would stay for Anna, and try to learn to control herself. Anna was her only hope.
Crack
It was all it took for Elsa’s footing to slip. As she had brought her back foot into the room, something shook under her and gave way. Terror struck in her throat, and she waved her arms to grab anything, but nothing was there. She found herself in a fall, too disoriented and scared to do anything but wail. She closed her eyes as she waited for the impact. She said her prayers as she fell toward the end.
