Chapter 15

Let Me In

Anna looked up in awe.

“Woah…”

Clusters of bright towers suddenly burst into view like the sun rising out of a starry night. Walking around the mountain corner, following the small snowman, had brought her great surprise at what lie just around the brownie-colored rock. She almost had to cover her eyes at the sight of its majestic beams.  Shimmery ice spiraled into the atmosphere above, so close in color that you couldn’t tell where the sky ended and the structure began. The ice’s natural camouflage was only weakened by its lustrous quality. The sight of the palace almost made her heart stop mid-beat. She beamed at the intricate designs, and skillfully created carvings that decorated the castle from the bottom of their sturdy walls to the very top of the frosty swirls above. Anna’s heart felt warm, like the snow was a blanket instead of a cold and wet cloak. She was bright with pride for her sister, at this magical place Elsa had created. It was like stepping into a whole different world. The whole thing was just so… astonishingly beautiful.

“Now that’s ice.”

She had almost forgotten she had company. The snowman, Olaf, was already halfway across the staircase to the front doors. Kristoff stood beside her, speaking in amazement at the godly art of his trade.

“I might cry.”

Anna kept her eyes on the architecture.

“Go ahead. I won’t judge.”

She said with a smirk. Anna started up the crystalline stairs, following closely behind Olaf. It only took Kristoff a few seconds to tie up his reindeer before he ran after them.

The pride and relief of arriving at the castle(finally) rapidly shot from her body like sand picking up in the wind. As she drew nearer to the door, everything was shut out except the sight of the door. Many visions of other doors that were kept closed in her face shot through her mind. This was most likely going to be a repeat of before. It was so easy to say she was going to talk to her sister and fix everything… It was quite another to actually do it. Anna was a normally optimistic girl, but Elsa’s situation was straining her hope. It was somewhat better believing the relationship Elsa saw with Anna was just pure animosity, but now knowing Elsa had a reason and was forced to be in isolation… It brought both comfort and dread. Though Elsa was free now, Anna certainly couldn’t take her place ruling the kingdom. Anna would never be ready in her eyes. Elsa had always been the responsible one. The kingdom needed Elsa, even if they feared her, or were confused about what she was. Needless to say, Anna didn’t care much for what her kingdom said about Elsa; Elsa would always be her older sister. She was comforted that Elsa had still loved her, nonetheless.

Anna stopped at the front door, her hand rising to knock but not making it to contact. Her hand stopped and quickly grew frigid, but not just because of the striking cold vapor emanating from the crystalline door. She felt the fear strike her heart, and anxiety sent shivers through her body. The door was a last challenge before she reached her goal. It had been there, like a lighthouse guiding a forsaken ship. She had continued toward it, despite the threat of endless icebergs and arctic walls impending on her hope.  Every dispute had kept her mind off the capital confrontation. Yet now here it was, one last step and her home and family could either be saved or destroyed entirely. There was no more ignoring the simple fact; talking with her sister would certainly not solve everything. Life did not work in this way that everything can be transparent and life-long battles could be ended simply with a word of apology. But Anna hoped that this effort to assuage her sister, peace could be somewhat achieved.

“Knock. Just knock.”

Olaf was starring at her like she was crazy. Anna blushed, her face turning even redder than the sharp icey air had from nipping at her cheeks.

“Why isn’t she knocking? Do you think she knows how to knock?”

Anna couldn’t put up with Olaf any longer, and finally got the nerve to quickly force her hand to tap on the icy surface.  It was just a tap but apparently it was enough. The door opened smoothly, without a single creak of the hinges.

“Well that’s a first.”

Anna remarked with a slight hint of starkness to her tone.
