Chapter 9
Now They Know
Elsa turned to stare as Anna left. She wanted to run after her, hug her, tell her they could keep open the gates as long as she wanted them open. She wanted tell Anna they could have parties every night. She wanted to tell her they could dance and have chocolate whenever they wanted. Elsa wanted to tell her everything. But she did nothing. She froze.
What does a cold-hearted person do best? They freeze. They ignore the problems, ignore the people who need them most, until it’s too late. They let their icy words and rigid thoughts tear away at the warmth around them, until they’re frozen forever. And then they freeze everyone around them. They take in any warmth they see and destroy it. And that’s what Elsa was doing to her kingdom. Keeping Anna in until she froze too.
Elsa knew she couldn’t keep the gates closed forever. But she always had the hope if she had a little longer she could control herself. Otherwise… Otherwise she would hurt everyone. She was a monster. And Elsa knew that a monster can’t be free; it must be contained.
So she watched her sister walk away with a broken heart. It wouldn’t be the first time; Anna’s heart was broken every time a door was shut in her face and Elsa knew it. It was a miracle Anna had even kept trying to be with Elsa. She had always shut her out yet they were laughing about the Duke only a few minutes ago.
Elsa tried not to make herself emotional. She didn’t want to cause any trouble, especially after she had made it this far through the night. Honestly, she hadn’t expected to get this far. The Coronation was a miracle in her eyes.
______________________________________
Elsa was calmly observing the party, still enjoying the company, especially since no one had tried to speak with her too much. The Duke had finally left her alone, and the party was almost finished. She made it a day with the gates open. Maybe it was possible to make it through her curse like a normal person. Maybe it was possible to have the gates open.
Elsa was talking to some old friends of her parents’ when she saw Anna emerge from the crowd of dancers. She had the Prince with her, one she had seen in the ceremony. She was about to ask Anna where she had been, but the two began to talk first.
“Elsa! I mean, Queen, me again, um… May I present Prince Hans of the Southern Isles.”
Elsa would’ve laughed at Anna trying to be formal, but she was wondering what Anna was doing with the Prince. She obviously was introducing him for a reason.
“Your Majesty.” The Prince bowed to her.
“We would like.. Your uh, blessing,”
Fear started to creep in on Elsa. She felt her heart beat faster, and she had to catch her breath.
“Of our marriage!” The two were a giggling mess but Elsa didn’t understand what was so funny. Was Anna crazy? It was true she hadn’t much love in her life, but marriage? They had just met a few hours ago.
Elsa took a deep breath, calming herself. Emotions wanted to spread through her body, and freeze the room so she could think. Fear wanted to freeze Hans. Guilt wanted to stop Anna. All of this was her fault. Anna couldn’t marry; she was too young, and foolish. But it was all Elsa’s fault; if she hadn’t caged her in she would know more about love and friendship. This Prince was no good. They couldn’t be in love.
The giggling continued.
“Marriage? I’m confused.”
Anna continued on explaining their planning the wedding, and how they have true love. She even began to mention them living in the castle with Elsa, and bringing Prince Hans’ brothers. They looked so happy… But she knew it wouldn’t last.
