Chapter 14

My Only Friend is a Stranger

Jack sat outside of Elsa's palace for a long time. He didn't dare take a step more toward the door after Elsa slammed it closed. He didn't understand what had happened. It took him awhile to process the situation. His initial thoughts were that she was overreacting of course. Jack couldn't imagine what had set her off. He had only been playing around; it was simple fun. Had she forgoten so much about joking around through the years? He had tried many times to bond with her like he used to; that was partly why this had been so exciting for him. After Elsa had grown up, and was forced to fear and isolate her powers more, she was entirely changed. No longer had she been the mischievious, energetic Elsa he had once known. She was cautious, always afraid and unsure of herself, and closed in. She had too much comprehension of the world, and too little spirit. She knew her curse's potential, so she always thought of the best ways to keep herself from feeling them. But in the end, you couldn't escape your destiny. At least thats what he felt the situation was like.

The longer Jack pondered the situation, the more baffled he became.

How could she just give me the cold shoulder like that? It's happened before, but that was because she couldn't see me...

She obviously didn't truely believe in me until now...

Slowly Jack gained insight. Elsa hadn't known he was there before. She must've felt alone, especially after she gave him up as her "imaginary friend". When he had showed up, Elsa realized she had never been forsaken, like she thought. She was comforted every day by an anonymous soul, a ghost of winter. Maybe it all was just a little too much for her. She was so used to being isolated and abandoned, she didn't know how to be with someone.

Jack easily might've over thought the situation. He also thought maybe Elsa was terrified of hurting others with her gift to such a great extent, that she took Jack's joke too seriously. She was a rationale girl after all. Jack just had to tread carefully after this. She was delicately emotional. Maybe she was even on that time of the month too, who knew.

He still felt crushed by her actions, the reasons for them didn't matter. Though he knew he should apologize to her, he felt hurt by her refusal to open up to him. They used to be such great friends; of course his was the only side who knew about the relation at the time. Jack still couldn't imagine Elsa's exact feelings. But he knew he had a lot of explaining to do for her.

Jack sighed at the wind. He was somber and bitter, but he knew he'd just have to deal with the situation. He would talk to her, and say something... say something smart. Hopefully. For the worst case scenarios, he tried to plan responses to anything she happened to ask him. A frigid breeze suddenly blew through. As if he weighed as much as a feather, he leaned back and let the wind take him to the palace's balcony.

I must seem like a stranger to her!

His closest friend didn't know a thing about him. She had never seen him before. It must feel very detatched for her, him just showing up out of no where and deciding to converse with her like old times. Jack would just have to get this friend to see him, not as a stranger any longer, but as an ally, at the very least.

Leaning against the icey wall, he waited patiently for her. He wasn't sure whether to go in, but soon his uncertain choice was decided for him. The doors opened gently, and the Queen strolled out to overlook her kingdom of white capped mountains. A wind blew her frosty blonde hair out of her face. The messy braid it was in actually looked attractive; it was a good messy. She had a distraught expression on her face. Her eyebrows were furroughed ever so slightly, and her lips were pressed in a thin line. Jack almost got up from his leaning position, but stopped, unable to speak. He didn't know what to say. All he had planned to say to her... It all disapeared in a wave of thoughts. His world was in a spiral of flurries, and he was trying to keep all of them together. But he knew he had to keep her; even though he knew Arendelle was in trouble, and it was partly his responsibility, this came first. He had to heal her frozen heart, to bring warmth back into her pumping veins. Maybe a little fun could drive away her fearful state.
