*Kagome's POV*

My heavy gaze was fixated out the window behind the bed. I was currently sitting cross legged on the unmade bed with my back facing the door. The bed was high enough and the window was low enough for me to view the outside world. It wasn't until this exact moment that I realized it had been a few weeks since I had been outside. More things became more apparent as I pondered, such as neither my ex boyfriend nor my so-called "friends" had bothered to stop by again. Or my mom, for that matter, which earned a sting in my heart and throat.

The very early morning was quiet and still. No one walked the pavement, nor a single car drove by. The crescent moon was just disappearing from view and being replaced by the sun. The street lights had finally gone out as dawn slowly approached. Pink and yellow streaked the barely awakened sky.

A few herons glided over the short buildings and under the vivid clouds. Their graceful wings flapped effortlessly against the wind. My eyes slowly followed them, watching their grey bodies land in a nearby lake behind a library.

"Whatcha doing up so early?" A voice whispered into my left ear. Breath lightly fanned the side of my neck, raising hair over my entire body.

I yelped in surprise, tearing myself away from the sudden voice and grabbed fiercely at my pounding heart. The sound of blood rushing pounded loudly in my ears.

"I-I was just-I was just-I-" I repeatedly stumbled over my words in a messy attempt to calm down. My lungs burned horribly from the jagged, painful pants that escaped me. Shaking helpless in my spot, a pressure wrapped around my wrist.

"Kagome, it's me. Koga." Koga murmured softly as he grabbed my trembling fingers and ran a thumb over my knuckles. "I'm sorry I scared you."

"M-Mhm." I whimpered quietly, leaning heavily into his broad shoulder. My free hand clutched his upper arm like a teddy bear. I could feel his muscles move under my fingertips as he rubbed my hand. His other hand drew circles on my shoulder blades, sending relaxed chills down my body.

After about a solid 10 minutes of hyperventilating, I stopped shivering from fear. My breath evened out to a steady, deep rythme. His hands continued to comfort me.

"Where has my mom been?" I croaked in a raspy whisper, eyes downcasted. A green thread stuck out from the bottom hem of his shirt. I grabbed the short thread and fiddled with it between my fingers.

"Your mom?" His hands paused their moments as he repeated the question. I nodded, rubbing my head up and down on his shoulder. He continued rubbing as he kept quiet for a few moments.

"When was the last time you checked your phone?"

"Not since the first day I woke up." A sinking feeling twisted my stomach into knots.

"I think you should check your phone."

"Koga?" My voice was small, too afraid to raise it above a whisper. I lifted my head to look at his eyes, but he wouldn't meet my gaze. He silently shook his head and withdrew his hands.

I leaned away from his comfort to stand. I lightly dragged a palm across the bed as I walked around the entire bed to get to the nightstand. Yanking open the drawer to reach inside, my fingers wrapped around the cold metal of my phone. There were dozens of notifications, including messages from Sango and Miroku. I disregarded them as I subconsciously drew a zigzag pattern to unlock my phone. My thumb was already reaching to tap on my voicemail. I continuously swiped down until I found the name "Mama" with one missed call.

"Baby, I got a call today from the doctor." Her soothing voice droned into my ears. I listened intently, hanging onto every word. I heard a small hit in her voice, which made me believe that there was horrible news.
