Melissa's POV
"I don't know much about them, and quite frankly, I don't want to." James tells me. And that's when I break. I start crying and I don't even know why. My parents are marrying me off, they aren't really my parents, my brother isn't my brother, my fiancé actually likes me, his best friend likes me. The list goes on and on. "Hey, hey. Don't cry, Melly." James hugs me, trying to calm me down.
"I-I-I'm sorry." I hiccup.
"Don't apologize either. You've done nothing wrong." He says, playing with my hair.
I look up at him and see the boy I remember when we were kids. The one who was a huge softy, but would always act tough around me. "I love you. Same DNA or not, you'll always be apart of my family."
"I love you too." He smiles at me. "Now, why don't we go see that fiancé of yours?" I laugh when James calls Niall my fiancé. He must be in a good mood today.
"Yep, might as well." And then we walk back to the living room. When we walk in all heads turn towards James and I.
I sit next Niall and he asks, "Are you okay? You look like you've been crying."
"Oh yeah, I'm good. I found out I'm adopted, though." I casually bring up that I'm adopted.
"Adopted?" Niall questions, sounding shocked. He had said it in a whisper, but loud enough of a whisper that the others heard, making them all look towards me questioningly.
"About that..." I chuckle nervously, not knowing what to say.
"We adopted Mel when she was an infant." James tells everyone, making everyone's attention on him. "I was young enough then that I didn't remember that we adopted her, and I didn't find out until a few weeks ago."
"So you're adopted?" Louis asks me.
"Yep, it seems so." I shrug my shoulders.
After a few minutes of chatting I remember what else James told me. "Oh, and I found out that the only reason my parents arrranged for Niall and I to be married is because my parents needed the money. I guess my birth parents decided that they want me back because of all the money I've made, so my adoptive parents have been paying them the money they've lost." I mention.
"My parents said we were running out of money to give them and that they didn't want to work Mel anymore than they had, so this was really our only choice." James adds.
"That's what this is all about? Money?" Niall asks, sounding and looking angry.
"Mate," Zayn addresses Niall, "it's not like they're using the money for their own gain, they're trying to keep Melissa."
"You aren't the one being used!" Niall snaps at Zayn. Oh god, not again.
A few hours later I try to talk to Niall -who's been ignoring me the entire time- and it doesn't go well.
"Hey, Niall." I smile, walking into the room he's staying in. He's sitting on the bed looking at his phone, looking rather bored.
Niall glares at me and says, "What do you want?"
"I just wanted to see what you were doing and to see if I could hang out with you." I tell him, frowning at him.
"You might as well leave then." He huffs at me.
"Are you still mad at me?" I ask, trying to see why he's being so rude. Niall stands up off the bed and walks towards me. When he gets close I start backing up, afraid that he might try to hurt me. He keeps walking towards me, and the next thing I know, he slams the door in my face.
"That wasn't nice!" I yell, then walk to my room.
I find Louis in there and I try to talk to him. "What's up, Louis?"
"How could you use him?" Louis questions, looking at me with pure anger.
"I didn't know they were using him until a little bit ago, dude, so stop acting like I knew before then." I defend myself.
"That's such a lame excuse, Melissa." Louis sighs.
"It's not an excuse, it's the freaking truth." And with that I leave my room and go to the backyard to have some peace and quiet.
~~~~~~
And that's basically how the next few weeks go; everyone arguing about Niall being used for his money. I've tried staying out of it, which isn't too hard since Niall won't speak to me anymore. Like it was my fault that my parents did this? I've tried talking to Niall, but he won't speak to me at all. Not even to ask for anything. And quite frankly, that makes dinner very frustrating. Even if the damn food was right in front of me Niall would ask someone else to pass it to him. I do my best to keep calm, though, since I understand what he's going through. And really, I don't have much room to speak because when my situation was similar to his I ran away.
I hear someone knock on my door then say, "Hey, Mel. Can I come in?" I recognize the voice as Liam's, so I gladly let him in.
"What's up?" I ask Liam as he walk into my room and sits on my bed next to me.
"Not much, just wanted to come hang out with you." Liam answers with a shrug of his shoulders.
"Are you going to be nice? Because if not, you can leave." I say, not sugar coating anything.
"Depends on what you think nice is." Liam shrugs his shoulders.
