He will bring us,
The seemingly neverending train of family members walking through Lupe and Cody's house did not waste any time complimenting the young couple on their brand new home.
Lupe's parents in particular couldn't contain their excitement — especially when they saw the empty rooms that they both hoped would be turned into baby nurseries soon.
"Mom! Dad!" Lupe protested, blushing a deep red.
Cody smiled, playing along with his mother and father-in-law. "We could have a pretty big family. I mean, we've got the room now."
His wife's eyes went wide and she was shaking her head. "Calm down, Cody. Honestly, we just got married one month ago."
"The man works fast." Lupe's father grinned brightly at the new addition to their family.
In a last ditch effort to save herself, Lupe raced back downstairs to the living room. She hoped that someone could need something, so she could keep her mind off of the fact that her parents and her husband were insufferable.
Did she want a baby? Yes, but she knew that if she had one right now with Cody, she'd spend most of the time raising it alone. Lupe had her own dreams and she wanted to follow them before she had kids.
Everyone involved knew that, so why did they play around with the subject? It didn't make much sense to Lupe, and she was the one who got headaches because of it.
The whole situation was a little bit of a mess.
"Hey, are you alright?" Her saving grace was her older cousin, who noticed the girl's panic-stricken face and took her by the arm. The duo then went into the hallway, where Lupe replied.
"No. My parents and Cody are still talking about babies." Lupe explained.
"Again?" The older woman's eyebrows shot up, to which the other girl nodded. "Oh, sweetie, I don't think they were trying to make you mad."
"Either way, they did." Lupe's hands were shaking a little and her cousin's face fell.
"You're really torn up about this."
"Yeah." She nodded, turning red.
Her cousin put the back of her hand on Lupe's forehead. "You're burning up. Come on, let's sit down and I'll get you some water."
"I'm fine." Lupe insisted but, when she went to walk away, she was swaying from side to side.
Uh oh.
As Lupe and her cousin went to walk over to the couch, one of her uncles picked up on her odd behavior. The older man walked up the stairs and poked his head in on Cody and Lupe's parents.
"I think Lupe isn't feeling well." He explained.
No sooner was he saying that, then the three of them were rushing to her aid. The girl was seated on the couch and sipping some water.
Cody got to her first.
"Are you okay, sweetie?"
"I don't know? Maybe?" Lupe shrugged.
"What's the matter?" Apparently her husband had a million questions and rightly so, the love of his life wasn't feeling well.
It was clear on her face — she turned pale and her hands were shaking, so he took them in his own.
Lupe chewed on her lower lip and figured that, if she didn't want to feel guilty anymore, she had to tell Cody the truth. No lying, no fibbing, nothing of the sort. He needed to know and, by the look on his face, he wanted to know.
"I just — I get kind of sad when you and my parents keep badgering me about babies. We've talked about it and, even though we both want one, I don't think we are in any position to have one. You want to be around to see their first steps, right?" The woman took a deep breath before freeing herself of her burden.
Cody nodded. "More than anything."
"And you want to be around to hear their first words?"
"Yes, Lupe. I do. You know I do, and you're right. With my career, I'm away for so long and seeing you both through a screen wouldn't be the same as seeing you in person." Cody reaffirmed her and pressed a kiss to her cheek.
"Sure, we could do it long distance, but we've both got big dreams." She replied, blushing at the sensation of Cody's lips on her cheek.
"You're right — mostly."
There was a glint if mischief in Cody's eyes and it confused and concerned Lupe.
Oh lord, where is this going?, she wondered to herself.
"What do you mean 'mostly?'" She arched an eyebrow.
Cody couldn't contain his grin, that was so big and bright it caused Lupe's heart to begin hammering against her chest.
"You're my dream, but you're very small."
Around them, a chorus of 'aw's and 'how sweet'scould be heard. Lupe laughed and kissed her husband.
"How silly."
"But romantic too?" He tried.
She nodded.
"And romantic too."
Goodness and light.
