I've always thought of you as a star.
Sometimes,
You're a star in the night sky,
You're like a glimmer of light amidst an abyss of darkness,
You're like a desk lamp, illuminating a textbook,
The light from a laptop screen, reflecting off a tired face,
A single star in the sky on date night;
Sometimes, you're just a star. A single star.

Other times, I've decided,
You're not a star.
You're not just a star.
Darling, you are an entire goddamn galaxy. You are the planets, with the footprints of everyone who's ever existed on them,
And you are the stars, with a fiery passion to get what you want,
Sometimes you're a meteor, a ball of fire moving with high intensity;
The next moment you're either a crater, crashing and coming to a halt,
Or you're the sun, your fire expanding, growing, burning.
Sometimes though, you're none of these- you're just the darkness in the background, Enveloping the others, holding them together, keeping them safe,
Like a blanket on family movie night, keeping everyone warm.

Sometimes you're not a real star,
Sometimes you're a starry tumblr gif,
Because sometimes you exist in the world only few are allowed into,
In the alternate reality, the parallel universe,
Where no person is a just a person,
Every person is either a gif or a photograph or a painting or some other piece of art.
Even in this life, where everyone is special, I'd still say that you're my favourite tumblr gif.

When you're not any of these,
You're the stars formed in the sky on the Fourth of July.
You're the burst of light and colour and bliss,
Admiring you is looked forward to all year long,
You are a celebration of independence,
A reason for everyone to come together.
You are a thing to be admired,
And it is a privilege to admire you.
