Chapter Three - Collision“Look who finally dragged their ass here,” Alisha sighed as she saw me jogging towards her. Her wild red hair was combed back and she was dressed classily. There is only one place Ali dresses that smart for. Believe me, i’ve seen in it all, from the makeup and short dresses on a night out, to the sweatpants and a hoodie with a hangover. From one look, I knew that where she had planned for us to go, somewhere I detested, but sensing her disappointment at me for forgetting her birthday I let it slide.
“I’m sorry, Ali, I really am. I never forget things like this, I’m losing my marbles already.” I looked at her apologetically between breaths whilst huffing and puffing because, lets face it, the last time I actually ran was in my last year of high school for Sports Day. As I recall, that ‘race’ was not pleasurable and there is a reason I stay away from the sports side of life.
She didn't respond to my statement and I began to worry. My mind started to overwork thinking that it could be the end of our relationship - not a friendship because we have been through way to much to class our lives as friends, I should be the Queen of overthinking because at that moment, Ali decided to punch be in the stomach.
“Hey! What was that for?” I shrieked, alerting bystanders minding their own business who gave us looks of distaste because of our crazy antics. Whilst I was nursing my side, my so called best friend was in a fit of laughter, giggling to herself.
“For being late and forgetting my birthday,” Ali shrugged and it was my turn, again, to feel bad. With the shortage of money and bills lined up, my mind certainly had been pre-occupied and Ali’s birthday had not been at the forefront of my to remember things.
“I’m really sorry Ali. What will I ever do without you? Happy birthday best friend,” I smiled at her and, with that, she pulled me into a hug. I knew she could never be that mad at me for that long. I was lucky in that sense, at least there was one person I could rely on. She was not just my best friend but a sister who, even though she could annoy the hell out of me, was there to drag me up no matter how hard - and trust me, I can be a difficult motherfucker - it is for her.
“Well, you could kiss me if you want,” Ali sniggered, but as soon as she saw a smirk forming on my face , she realised what she said and made a sour face. “No, absolutely not. Forget I ever said that. Ew, no, gross!”
“No darling, I don’t mind kissing you,” I tried saying seductively whilst batting my eyelashes flirtatiously, mocking her. The tension from my tardiness had completely disappeared leaving us laughing at our foolishness.
“Ew, no Erica!” Pushing my hands away causing me to laugh.
“Stop saying ew!”
“Ewwww”
“Noooo! God, you are so annoying!” I said laughing, poking her on the forehead.
“Well, what can I say. I was born this way!” She giggled causing me to roll my eyes and laugh along with her.
“Sooo, what do you have planned today?” I asked after we recovered for our fits of laughter.
“Just a small lunch, I promise it isn’t large and scary,” she said tugging my arm as we started to walk to the dreaded destination. When I say dreaded, that only referred to me, I hate the place she is taking me.
Alisha is wealthy, her parents are workaholics, her mother is a lawyer and her father an owner of a large chain of five-star hotels. She was born with a silver spoon in her mouth but fortunately is one of those people who is down to Earth and never flashes her position to anyone. She never belittled anyone - a trait that I really appreciate and love about her. Although Alisha is crazy, aren’t we all, she is humble and never lets her position of wealth determine her relationships with people. Hence that is why we are friends - an odd pair, I know.
