One foot in front of the other drove me through the revolving door to enter the lobby of the very aesthetically pleasing Manhattan building I would now be working in. I smiled to myself, I felt good and ready for the day and whatever it may bring. The building was modern and sophisticated but still in touch with an understanding of its history. There were carvings in the bricks and lions placed at the entrance gave the building an aged look.
I was in complete awe as I walked in, seeing impeccably dressed people sauntering around the lobby completing no doubt important work. I walked up to reception and was greeted by a slim blonde woman, wearing a top that showed her cleavage perfectly.
"Hi, how can I help you?" She asked me, smiling.
"Hello, I am here to see Xavier Manhattan," I said to her, feeling anxious as suddenly the grandeur of this place hit me slightly. Instantly her facial expression changed to one of disgust and I immediately felt a wave of nausea pass over me.
"And you are?" She snapped at me, ruining the amazing experience I had walking through the doors of this place.
"I am his new personal assistant," I shot back, annoyed about her sudden change of attitude towards me. I did not really know where this fierceness and confidence was coming from but I liked it.
She literally jumped out from her eat in surprise and shook my hand tightly.
"Hey Erica! I am Elizabeth Sanchez but please, call me Liz," she said exuberantly with a wide grin. Talk about mood swings! I wondered how she new my name and why she seemed so pleased to see me.
"Hi Elizabeth, glad to meet you," I said whilst releasing her hold on my hand, "but how do you know my name?" She did not have time to reply because a familiar voice spoke for her.
"I told her," he said and I turned round to see a tall, dark and skinny man in front of me with a grin on his face. "Hi, I am Ron," he said with a wink at me.
"Oh, hey Ronner," I greeted him with a smile and a laugh.
"Hey, sorry for being rude at first but any girl that comes in here are just reverted and I have to protect that man all the time. Oh, the work I do," Liz said laughing with us. She baffled me, she was nice, then rude, then belittled us with her job title, then back to being nice. Surely receptionists enjoy conversing with people, I mean that should be the main attribute an employer is looking for, otherwise why give them a job? Putting my personal feelings and considerations about the subject I smiled and decided that on my first day it was better to laugh off anything that made me feel uncomfortable.
"It is okay, Liz" I said smiling, I did not want to make any enemies here.
"Are we done chatting? There is work to be completed," a deep voice from behind me said, startling me.
I looked around to see Xavier standing there looking even more dashing as I had remembered, unfortunately. He wore a navy and white suit with a red tie and files in his hands, He looked as hot as fuck and that was a problem. When I stopped ogling him for a second I glanced at his face and it was one of irritation, I normally could not read him. He was an emotionless stick of nothing but that only added to his mysterious side. However, today I could read him like a book and he looked pissed off so I decided that today would not be a good day to rub him up the wrong way.
"We were not really chatting, sir," Ron tried to explain and diffuse the sudden tension that had arisen. Gone was friendly Ron, instead a cold and obedient man stood next to Xavier and received the files without any word.
"These files need to be given to the fiancee department but the end of the day, but I really want the completed sooner that that. Make sure it is signed and then make sure they are handed directly to me," Xavier instructed Ron.
"Of course, Sir," Ron spoke and stayed by hi side.
"Well?" Xavier spoke again, clearly not impressed by the previous explanation given by Roner.
"We were just introducing ourselves," Liz said taking it upon herself to answer as I had no intention of speaking up. She spoke sweetly and batted her eyelashes and I suddenly found the floor very appealing and I saw Ron doing the same.
"You all listen very carefully. I do not want dumb chatterboxes in my office. Time is precious and is money. You are not here to socialise. Ihired you all for your professional contributions to this establishment and that is it," He spoke with gravity to his voice and I gulped, I felt like he was reprimanding me much more that them. My first day was going excellently, I felt like I should remind somebody because there was always someone there to witness my unfortunate moments.
"Now get to work, and you," he pointed his finger at me and proceeded to walk off, "follow me." He was putting a dampener on my otherwise preppy mood and I tried to shove my thoughts of him away and focused on the day ahead. I followed behind him, trying to match his strides.
