1 month later.
"No sir, I'm extremely sorry but Mr. Manhattan is not free on the coming Monday...........uh-huh........yes sir.... Next month would be perfect....Yes sir.....5 PM Hotel Pacific... Mr. Manhattan would be there.....sorry for the inconvenience again.........Have a good day sir. Thank you." I literally threw the receiver down and blew out a big breath.
"Wow! Must be hard huh?" I looked up to see Liz smiling sympathetically at me,
"What?" I closed my eyes and sat back in my chair. I could feel a headache looming and it was driving me crazy.
"Getting all these calls from outraged clients and apologizing all the time because your husband's a dick and cancels a meeting whenever he feels like?" She sarcastically questioned as she dragged a chair near my desk and sat down.
"Here take this coffee and calm yourself down," Feeling grateful, I took the coffee from her hand and the cup was cold, just like I loved it.
"Yummy! " I licked the cream off my upper lip, it tasted amazing, "Thanks for the coffee, it's perfect," I said taking another sip, savouring the taste. I hadn't been able to get a coffee due to being constantly bombarded with phone calls. Talking to angry clients was taking a toll on me.
"Well, it's the least I can do. You are working yourself too hard Erica." She had a worried look on her face. "Xavier is hardly seen in his office, every time you ring him he is in another country. It is driving me crazy and I'm not even married to him. How are you even managing it?" She took a sip of her coffee and closed her eyes as she indulged herself in the mouth-watering taste.
I sighed, "We don't have any other option Liz besides making it work. Xavier literally left all his clients hanging because of my accident. His company almost lost its goodwill, all because of me. How can I ever repay him? These calls that I'm attending are the least I can do to show my gratitude." I took another sip, but this time, the feeling of guilt took over the taste of my coffee.
"Hey! It's not your fault," Liz slapped my arm lightly, "Stop blaming yourself for it."
"That's correct," I looked up and saw Ron standing in front of my desk. "What happened was not your fault Erica." He shook his head.
I smiled at their efforts in cheering me up, but I still knew it was my fault. It is because of me that Xavier is facing all of these difficulties with his company, he had to miss all of his appointments and his clients were losing his trust in him. He hasn't been home for the last month, moving from Italy to New York and then to Australia and Japan. I'm worried about his health. That guy can work for hours without eating and that is what scares me. I did call him last night only for it to go straight to voicemail. When I woke up this morning, I saw 15 missed calls from him around 3 at night. I called him back but he did not pick up. It was because of time differences and our clashing schedules, I would be asleep when he would ring me and vice versa. We haven't talked since last week and I miss hearing his voice. Texting is hardly a solution and it has come to a point where I don't know what to do.
"Guys I think I'm going to meet my mom today, I really need to talk to her."
"Sounds perfect," Liz stood up, "And I think I should get going, I still have to make some important calls." She smiled at me before speaking, "Tell me if you need something okay?" she waved her hand and walked away.
I shut down my laptop and stuffed all the reports into my bag. I would look at those once at home.
"Need a ride home?" Ronner asked me as he threw his empty can of juice into a nearby dustbin. I saw him mumble to himself with delight when it had gone in. "No, I don't think so. I'll call the driver to drop me." I smiled at him.
