I instinctively close my legs, making Lucifer yelp in surprise. He pulls away and yanks down my dress, almost making it go too far down. I kick my fallen panties behind the bar stool as I stand up.
Lucifer moves in front of me, but I can see the woman at the door.
It's not Maze. Oh far from it. Her long dark hair and brown eyes aren't anything special to most, but I could never forget her face.
"Mother?" I say in disbelief.
"Lily? Is that really you?" she asks, and Lucifer turns around, looking to me.
"That's your mother?"
I nod wordlessly and look to my mother again.
"What are you doing here? Are you working here?"
"Um...you could say that?" I say uncertainly, laughing awkwardly. Nothing quite as embarrassing as having your mother, who you haven't seen in years, walk in on you getting eaten out by someone.
"Where have you been all these years? Have you been with this man? Why? How? I need to call the police." She starts reaching for her phone, and Lucifer and I both panic.
"No no no!" we shout at the same time.
"Well, then what's going on here? Why were you stuck between her legs? Where has she been all these years?"
This is so like my mother. She throws out questions in rapid succession, making it impossible for anybody to explain anything.
"I'm sorry I didn't call, um—"
"She'd been busy, you see," Lucifer cuts in. "Can you blame her, though? We've been very close. I'm very sorry she hasn't called you, but rest assured, she's safe with me."
He didn't lie. But he wove a tale that made it seem as though we'd been together for years now.
"Yeah, we were kind of...too into each other," I say lamely, and my mother looks to me.
"I haven't seen you in years, and that's your excuse? You're too in love to bother to phone your own mother? You changed your number and disappeared off the face of the earth, and this is what you tell me?"
She's pissed. Reasonably so. But I couldn't bear to talk to her when I was working on the streets. She would disown me. It was better to just cut her out of my life completely.
"How did you even find me?" I ask after a moment, the thought not having crossed my mind yet.
"A friend told me," she says, scowling at the word "friend". Doesn't seem like she likes this person too much.
"Which friend?"
"How should you know which friend? You haven't spoken to me in years," she says, as if the fact is just now occurring to her.
"Mother, please—"
"What have you really been doing these past years?" She narrows her eyes at me.
"We've been together," I lie, looking to Lucifer. He gives me an understanding look. He knows I don't want her to know about my life.
"Stop lying to me, Lily. I know what you've been doing," she says, and my face pales.
"What?"
"You filthy whore," she spits. "I gave you a chance to come clean, but instead, you lied to my face."
I can't believe my own mother would say something like that. Sure, she wasn't the best mother in the world, but I didn't think she would say something so horrible.
"How dare you—" Lucifer steps forward, and I can swear that there are flames in his eyes. I stop him, putting a hand on his chest.
"Lucifer, no."
"You expect me to believe that you're in a relationship?" she asks. "I know he bought you."
"That's not how it was—" he starts, but she raises a hand, shutting him up.
"You're nothing to me, whore." She looks to Lucifer. "And you, you pathetic—"
"Don't talk to him like that," I snap without even thinking.
"I'm disgusted by the both of you," she says bitterly.
"Did you come to find me just to say that?" I question, feeling more shocked than anything. For a moment, I thought I could get my life with my mother back. But no more.
"I needed to see you," she responds. "And see for myself if you were really...a whore." The way she says the word makes my heart clench. "And it's clear. His head was quite literally between your legs."
"She's not—" Lucifer starts, his fists clenching.
"I don't care! She's not my daughter anymore. I don't know who you are."
"Get out," Lucifer says lowly.
"I'm not done—"
"Get. Out," he growls, stepping forward. This time, I don't stop him. "Get out before I make you. And never step foot in my nightclub or come near her again."
I can't see his face, but suddenly, my mother's face turns to one of sheer terror.
"What are you?" she breathes, her eyes wide as she looks at him.
"Out," he hisses, and she runs out, clearly terrified out of her mind.
But when Lucifer turns back to me, he's the same Lucifer I've known. I don't know how to deal with this. I had thought that one day, maybe I could be with my mother—and my sister—again. But now, I know that's not going to happen.
"Are you okay?" he asks softly, and I shake my head.
"I just...I thought I could be with her again," I admit, and he comes over to me.
"You don't deserve her," he says.
"But she's right. I'm just...I was just a whore," I whisper, the weight of the word seeming to pull me through the floor.
"Don't say that. You did what you had to do to survive," he says, touching my face and making me look to him. "You're so beautiful," he whispers softly.
I close my eyes and cover his hand with mine. I've only known him for two days. But I feel like I've known him forever.
He kisses my forehead softly before pulling me into a hug. I bury my face in his chest, breathing in his scent. At least I have him.
