ごめんなさいみんなさん!
(Sorry Everyone!)
Your face collapsed as fast as your voice, leaving your expression in silent horror. You tried to recover but failed, looking away with a sheet white face and waving a hand sporatically. "What?! You must have misheard! Who would want to marry a dumbass like that! There's no way he's engaged. No way in hell." You sputtered, despite the fact you knew it wouldn't work.Sans seemed worried, but he didn't say anything. He just looked at you as you panicked. He almost seemed upset.
You tried to explain, but couldn't find the right words. "You know how his kind of people are, right? All bark no bite! Can't trust a thing he says... or does! Besides it's not like it'll affect you in any way! You shouldn't worry yourself over some coward."
"Why shouldn't I worry myself with your engagement? We are friends aren't we?" Sans pondered.
"Of course we're friends. I just-" You paused. You didn't negate his first question. You didn't know how to. "I'm sorry." You whispered, giving up as you rested your head to the counter top. "I kinda assumed he wouldn't pull any low blows with you around but it seems he has no problem doing so..."
Sans was silent as he examined you. You kept your eyes intently glued to the smooth wooden surface beneath your face. "The engagement is totally bogus. It's like a gesture to my parents, showing Dusty's parent that they intend to remain loyal to their sponsor. It's kinda part of the reason i rushed to leave home so quickly."
"Sponsor? What are you talking about?" Sans asked.
You laughed slowly and lifted your head. You ran your hand through your hair and sighed. "Well, my parents seem pretty well off. You've seen that much, but that's because they run a successful t.v. network. Infomercials and stuff like that. But it all stems from the huge bucks Dusty's parents invested towards it at the beginning. They're still a huge part in keeping my family afloat. If I give them any reason to hate me, they'll take it out on my home."
"That isn't fair to you though!" Sans argued.
"Life isn't fair. If it were, monsters wouldn't even need ambassadors to integrate them into society. But monsters need ambassadors. And I need to deal with my engagement." You muttered.
"This is the rest of your life your talking about. What about the future you had plans for?" Sans asked.
You looked away and placed your chin in your palm. "I can still have those dreams, they'll just be more like a... not like a side job... but more of a hobby. I just have to get married, as a good sign. Past the golden chains and pearl weights of Dusty's snobbish lifestyle, I could somewhat maintain my science passion."
Sans looked at you with poison in his gaze. You could feel a chill trickle down your spine as you nervously stirred your drink. Sighing, you gently held Sans' free hand in yours and held his gaze.
"Listen Sans, I'm glad you're concerned about me. Knowing someone cares about me is a huge confidence booster, but you can't change the course of action by pouting over it. Do what I do and just suck it up. Make the most of it." You advised. You pretended to check your nonexistent watch and faked a pout.
"Sorry Sans, we have to cut this early. I have to get home. Feel free to keep going without me though." You offered.
"Let me get you home first." He insisted, but you shook your head.
"I'll take a cab. I don't want to cut your fun short. Thanks for taking me out Sans."
You lifted yourself from your seat and left with a hurry, shutting the door behind you with finality. In the parking lot nearby the restaurant, several cabs had parked awaiting drunken patrons to stumble from the bar. Rushing over, I tapped the window of the closest one and waited as they rolled their window down. At the wheel of the car sat a lizard-like monster with scales the color of sapphires. "Sorry ma'am, but the human drivers are pick up only." He said, not even looking up.
