It was 12 years back when Mom and I first moved to my grandparent's place to live. It was a tough year. Mom lost her job. I had to change schools. But even with a lot going on in my life Jay was my beacon of hope.
He wasn't your typical boy next door, though he actually lived next doors. He was the withdrawn kid, the one which we all now call as the socially awkward. He was a shy 12 year old who rarely spoke to anyone.
His brother Kyle was the more friendlier one of their entire household. Apart from being 5 years older than me, he treated me like his very own best friend and sister.
There were times when Kyle and I would be sitting together, talking and laughing and Jay would just look at us and go back inside his room.
It seemed like he trapped himself there.
'Why doesn't he talk much?' I asked Kyle once.
'He's a shy kid. He'll come around one day.' He answered.
But he never did. At least for that year.
