Two months passed and I started feeling normal again. With Jay's help, I was doing really good in my studies too. Mom was happy that I would finally get into college some day because of my good grades.
Also, Jay taught me to accept Harry in my life as my step dad. Despite his busy business schedule, Harry made it a point to visit me every Friday to spend some time with me. I grew up without a dad, so it was nice to have some one who would buy stuff for you every weekend, take you out to costly restaurants and play a protective father figure role.
'Harry is trying really hard to be a good step dad. You must try to accept him too.'
We were sitting on our usual place on the porch.
'I know' I replied. 'I grew up without a dad. So its kinda hard.'
'I grew up without a dad too you know' he said.
'Atleast yours didn't abandon you.' I said in retort.
Jay's absence for a quick comeback startled me. I knew that his dad was a sensitive topic. Maybe I shouldn't have started this conversation.
'My parents did not die in an accident.' His voice was hard and he choked as he spoke.
'My mom died in childbirth. My Dad, he is still alive.'
His words were a shocker. I was too stunned to reply anything sensible. Luckily he kept on going.
'My dad didn't want me. To him, I was the one who killed his dear wife. So, he gave me up to his friend to raise. Kyle and his parents Steffi and Ross are my family now. There were times when we had hardships, but Steffi and Ross, no, Mom and Dad had never stopped loving me.'
I felt so bad for Jay that tears started flowing out of my eyes.
'So your real father is still out there?'
]<>
'Yup' he replied. 'His name his Lark and he sends me money every year for my education.'
