'Kimmie? Gosh I thought you would never text!'

It is said that a child adapts his character from the people he grows up with.

Kyle and Jay weren't even closely related, but they were both good listeners to my rants.

While Kyle was busy with his life in his new town, Jay became my new best friend now and I found myself sharing everything to him.

Not a day went by, without me talking to Jay.

But after I started dating Richie, my attention became divided between my best friend and boyfriend.

Richie took up most of my time both at school and at home.

But I still went over to Jay's to play Nintendo during the weekends.

Jay clearly didn't approve of Richie. Said he was too snobby.

One of the worst things in life is when your birthday falls during the summer holidays.

My sixteenth birthday was a gloomy one as it was the day my mom officially moved out to live with Harry, who was now her husband.

The separation was real and I had no one to console me. I wanted my mom to be happy. She had indeed endured so much for me and so I pretended to be happy and smiling throughout the lowkey sweet sixteen birthday party that she had thrown me at my grandparent's house.

I had a few friends over and after dinner, My mom left to live with Harry in his house.

Richie had vacationed to the other side of the world to meet his relatives who lived there and had been gone the whole summer. His phone had some issues and I couldn't contact him either.

It was 11:00 in the night when everyone left and I was lying curled up in the couch in the living room when Jay came in.

'Happy birthday Pumpkin' he said in a cheery tone.

'You didn't bring me a gift' I said disappointed.

'Sorry Cherie, I was busy with the summer classes. I'll buy you something nice tomorrow.'

He sat down at the other end of the couch.

The bluish white light from the TV was the only light in the dark room.

I shifted up to a sitting position.

'I miss her, Jay' I whispered after sometime. Tears flooded my eyes.

Jay looked at me with compassion in his eyes. He shifted closer and put his arms around me as I snuggled closer to him.

'I miss her so so much' I said through my sobs wetting his t shirt.

I didn't know how long we sat like that. In each others arms. But it was the most comforting night of my life.

After a while, I laid down on the couch with my eyes closed. Jay was gently stroking my hair. The Tv was quietly humming in the background, lulling me to sleep.

All of a sudden, I felt Jay shift in the dark. He leaned closer to my ear, his lips brushing my ear lobes.

'I am sorry I didn't bring you a birthday gift, Kimmie'

With that he kissed me.

He must have thought that I was sleeping.

I felt the urge to open my eyes and shout 'WTH'

But I let it happen. I actually enjoyed it.

He then silently left the room leaving me with a heavy heart and a very confused brain.
