I walk out my room and hear the mechanical woosh my door makes as it slides shut. Walking further down the hallway I head to the elevator at the end of the large room, On my way I look to either side of me and take notice of my comrades rooms, they should be waiting for me at the colonels office, so I don't bother on knocking there doors to see if they are on the other side.
I walk inside the elevator and look for the button that will take me to the colonels office.
The building houses troops who fight for "the order", an organization created to combat demons who now populate the majority of the earth. You would think with our army, scientist, and state of the art weaponry we would be winning, but you'd be dead wrong.
We've been fighting since 2015 and it's now 2112. Over a hundred years of having our asses handed to us.
I find the button I need and reach to press it to take me to the top floor, but before I can a sharp pain hits my head, it's a scorching pain that is difficult to explain, it's as if I was going through a lobotomy procedure, and soon a ringing noise filled my ears.
I saw her for a split second, the girl who haunts my dreams, I saw her in a tattered dress and flames surrounding the two of us. I could hear her voice, a voice that was once so soothing now filled with pain, and hatred.
"You didn't protect us." Her haunting words ran havoc in my ears, "you left us to die and now YOU CAN BURN IN HELL!"
"No!" I screamed, and just as soon as the pain started, it vanished, as if it was never there to begin with. The image, the voice it all stopped.
I begin turning in circles and instead of a raging fire I am surrounded by the metal walls of an elevator. I quickly hit the top floor button and hear the elevator begin to make its accent.
"It isn't anything, there gone, I am alright" I repeat to myself over and over again.
I hurry and regain my bearings before the elevator opens on my designated floor. I walk out and head into the hallway, the walls lined with paintings of past directors and fallen heroes, There dozens of the painting in the hallway alone. It was a reminder of how long we've been fighting. I pass all doors and focus on the on at the very end. In gold letters there was a plaque that read "colonel Mays", god how I hate this women.
I knock once on the door and walk in, only to be greeted by the damn bitches trademark stare. "Sgt. Nightroad" she address me, "colonel" I reply.
"Where is my squad?" I asked knowing that the blue haired prick had something to do with their absents.
"I've already briefed them on the mission but I have something that I need to discuss with you behind closed doors" she hissed at me.
Oh god what could it be. "We found high levels of contractor activity in the eastern part of the old city".
Contractors are humans who make pacts with super natural beings like myself. The information is important because I am a contractor and my "master" was separated from me on "that" day. I tried to hide the scowl on my face but failed.
"I want you're squad to head there and eliminate any monsters there, but as for you I want you to bring back the possible contractor".
My sole duty is to protect my contractor until the agreement that binds us has been fulfilled, and if there's a possibility that whoever this is maybe my contractor means I can't turn down the mission.
"I'll find my squad and suite up" I answered, "take the helicopter in hanger twelve" she replies. I turn and walk out without a word and immediately went to find my teammates. The only thing that I could think about though was what do I do if I actually find my contractor.
