I woke up with hazy vision, my back was on fire and I was exhausted. Something was off though, I wasn't in the bird but in a recovery room in HQ. I sit up but quickly regret it as I fall back on the bed from the sudden need to vomit, I try to move my limbs until I notice something, I can't feel my arm. I look over to see my cursed arm hooked to a special machine, the scientist in the order were able to build a machine specifically for me if I was injured seeing how I am not human.
The machine could monitor everything in my body by using these holy items built into it to attach to my arm, but they were subdued greatly so they wouldn't burn off my arm. I look at one specific number on the machines monitor that told me the only thing I needed to know, thirty five years. That's how long I had to live, the thing about my cursed arm was that it stripped me of immortality and only gave me two hundred years to live after I was banished from heaven. My thoughts were suddenly interrupted as I snapped my attention to the pink haired girl moving the curtain that was blocking the rest of the infirmary from my sight.
The pink haired girls name was Alisha, a nurse that worked here and really the only person I ever opened up to.
"I see you're finally awake, if you didn't look so beat up I'd thought you'd been drinking all night with Markus" she joked at me.
"Haha very funny can you just tell me what's wrong with me?" I was in no mood for her teasing.
"Straight to the point like always, you're back was hurt from a shrapnel injury and you're arm will be paralyzed for another half hour, but what I want to know is how did all this happen?"
Shrapnel, that's what must have made me pass out, I was probably losing too much blood in a short time.
"Me and Marko blew up a building so that's where the shrapnel came from, and the girl we found did something to my arm, I don't know what but it sure as hell did what it was meant to do" I quickly answered.
"Well when you're able to get up and this "girl" wakes up you can go and question her, with your healing factor ability you should be out of here in a hour"
Man am I glad I have that ability, if I was human i'd be done for, the ability allows me to quickly heal my wounds, but due to restraints by the colonel the power has been slowed to a crawl, meaning I can't heal during a fight. The troops here at the order have a healing factor seeing as how their genetically enhanced humans, but theirs can only do so much compared to mine.
"What about the other one? We rescued two people back there" I asked her, remembering how Autumn and the others ran into another person.
"He didn't have serious injures and was allowed to rest in one of the unused rooms in the facility and I suggest you talk to him, he can probably tell you about the girl since she's not awake."
I gave her my thanks and just as she was getting ready to leave the room I asked her something.
"Alisha wait."
"Yes Dante?" She turned and I could see how the light coming from outside made her teal eyes sparkle.
I look at her then ask with a small smile "can ya bring me a drink please?"
I then saw one of her beautiful smiles "sure thing" she says, then I watch her leave the room, and I'd be lying If I said she didn't look good in that green dress.
Once my back was feeling better I left the infirmary and headed to find the boy we saved back at the old city, my arm was still weak but It was slowly getting it's strength back, the boy was in the lower levels of the building, room twelve. I quickly find the room and knock on the door, it slides open and i see a boy around seventeen standing in front of me, he was lightly tanned and had short black hair with a shine to it, he stood around five eight but I still had to look down to him.
"You're Austin Guerrero?" I ask.
"Um yeah, then that means you're Sgt. Nightroad, one of the nurses said you'd come talk to me."
He had this energetic vibe to him, he stood tall trying not to show that he was intimidated, and just by hearing him talk I could tell he was going to be exactly like Keith.
"Can I come in?"
"Yeah sure" he responded.
I take a seat on the couch not far from the door and he sits in the chair across from me, I can tell why he did that, he was scared of me and if he said one wrong thing he'd hope the table between us would slow down any attack I would attempt, but to be honest I wasn't planning on hurting him.
"I just need to know a few things and I'll be on my way. I want to know where you're from, and what you know about the girl that we rescued along side you?"
"Um well I am from Mexico and I had only known that girl for a few days."
"Mexico? But that place is overrun, the branch of the order there fell off years ago, how did you survive and then make it to New York?" I asked him honestly wanting to know how a normal human, no a child, could survive in places that are now long gone.
"Well while I was in Mexico I lived underground for a few years until the demons started digging to find any survivors, I didn't have any family so I had to only worry about myself and I had enough food to get me to Texas. I used one of the routes that would take me to the gulf, the area isn't populated and I was able to find a row boat to escape with it a while back, I took the boat and went out to get to a port I knew would be safe till the sea monsters attacked." The boy suddenly stopped as if he was trying to repress the memory.
"The sea monsters?"
"They started showing up on the west coast but have been moving east, they attacked and through me off course for three days until I ended up in Louisiana. there I met these people, they called them selves the gator tribe and had good connections that could get me as far as Virginia."
I looked at him completely shocked, that's how he got so far, he had help from the right people, the gator tribe was very well acquainted with the Miami branch, that's were I first joined the order but the branch didn't survive the purge, a story better told at a different time, but knowing that the gator tribe was still around gave me a little hope that my home isn't all gone, and that there are still those who put others before themselves are still out there. It meant that humanity isn't dead yet.
" When I got to Virginia those helping me gave me a map and told me to follow the route marked on it and I would end up here in a few days, they gave me supplies and I was off. I made it here in New Jersey but the map was lost, I dropped it because I was being chased by those demons and I went off route for another day and ended up in New York."
That explains why he went there and not here but how did he get jersey mixed with New York? I would have to ask later since I needed to know one specific thing and I was short on time. "How did you meet the girl?" I asked.
"She saved my ass when a large group of demons found me and kept me hidden in a old building for a few days, I told her about you guys and if we went the right way we might end up here in a few days. She wanted to leave as soon as possible, but we couldn't leave unprepared so we would go on a supply run, she knew only two places left where we could find food and weapons, so I went for food while she got us protection and if things went smooth we would leave the next day but..."
"The horde found you" finishing his sentence for him.
"Yes, if you didn't come when you did I would be dead." "That's all I need so i'll be on my way."
I got up to leave when Austin grabbed my attention once again.
"Thank you Sgt. I really mean it."
"No problem" I reply, then I walk out the door. I could get to the girls room by walking outside of here since the wing she was in could only be reached from leaving the lower level. I walk out to feel a cool breeze and see the sun setting, I pull out a smoke (what I call cigarets) light it and head over to my last agenda for today.
