Chapter Four~

Suddenly, I heard a bang, and I jolted upright, realizing then that I had fallen asleep. I instantly went towards the door, thinking of mother. I opened it, slowly at first, thinking of demons. Delst stood there, with another girl I didn't recognize.

"Where's Mother?!?" I demanded.

"Here child, I'm here," I heard her say.

I let out out a soft cry and embraced her as she stepped into view. Delst and the girl stumbled into the kitchen.

"Your brother is hurt. I need you to get the medical supplies I kept in the cellar,"

"Who is that gir-"

"-now Neera." She said sternly.

Running, I went through the kitchen and past Grandmothers room. There was a latch in the floor just outside her door, that was covered with a rug. I was never really allowed to go near it, for mother always feared that I would fall and break my neck. But that was a long while ago. Before They took over even.

I lifted up the rug and pulled on the handle, desperately trying to open it. I could tell that Delst was in trouble by the look Mother gave me. The cellar door didn't budge. Letting out a frustrated sigh, I kicked at it, trying to make it move open.

"You have to turn the handle first Neera," someone whispered behind me.

I whirled around, to face whoever spoke, ready for a demon attack. But before me stood Grandmother, leaning on the door.

"Grandmother, you need to lie down!! You'll just become more sick, and waste your energy!!" I exclaimed.

"Child," she said softly "I have reached the age where I have seen it all. Laying in that bed is only making me weaker. If I am finally reaching the end of my days, then I want to see what's rest of my family, and I want to see the sun, the moon, and the stars. At least once more,"

She smiled softly and her eyes gleamed. This was the grandmother I grew up with. The one that helped raise me.

She shuffled towards me. "Now, turn the handle to the left," I did as she said, "and now pull on it,"

I gave one final tug, and the cellar door gave a giant creak, and burst open. Pulling the door back, I rested it on the floor.

"Careful now child," grandmother warned softly.

I nodded once, and climbed the ladder down into the cellar. Frantically looking for the switch, I stumbled around in the dark. Suddenly, I crashed into something on the floor, and I collapsed. I carefully touched the thing I tripped on. It was the medical kit. That made things easier. Grabbing it, I stumbled my way back to the entrance. I climbed up the ladder and quickly closed the cellar door, and pulling the rug over it. Grandmother followed me to the kitchen.

"Thank you," mother said, taking the kit from me.

She set it on the floor, next to where Delst lay. I looked at the wound. There was a gash across his side, from the top of his rib cage to his hip bone. It didn't look exactly deep, but then again, no injury should be over-looked. I glanced up and saw the girl that came with Delst and Mother. She looked maybe a year younger than Delst. She had long, soft strawberry blonde hair that framed her round face. Her eyes were large and quite round, and a dark blue. She was pretty, I guess, but I was never one to judge someone's appearance. She looked up from Delst and saw me looking at her. She smiled slightly, then returned her gaze to Delst. That's when I noticed that she was clutching his hand. I was about to say something, nothing nice, when Grandmother put a hand on my shoulder, silently telling me not to say anything. I slowly shut my mouth.

Delst groaned as Mother put a herbal substance on the wound, and wrapped a bandage around it. I saw the girl squeeze his hand, and look at him sympathetically. I suddenly became protective. No ones supposed I look at him like that.

"Neera, you can put the medical kit on the table. He should be alright. We'll check the wound in an hour or so," Mother said.

I put the kit on the table, and turned to the girl.

"Who are you." I demanded.

She looked at me for a few seconds then glanced at my mother.

"Neera, this is-" my mother started.

"No, I asked her, not you," I interrupted her, then turned to the girl. "So. Who are you!?"

She sighed then glanced at Delst. "I'm Amelia. Your brothers fiancé,"

I stepped back, my mouth dropping open. There was no way that my brother was engaged. Did he understand how much mother, grandmother and I needed him?!! Ever since father died, he took charge, helping mother get food and supplies. If he was engaged, he would leave us. I turned to my mother, enraged. That was why she told me about how I would need to be the supporter. She knew!!!! I turned and ran to my room, slamming the door. I knew mother would soon follow me, so I quickly climbed through my window, not wasting any time. I scrambled down the side of the house and ran to the forest. The one thing that hasn't changed as I've grown up. The one thing that I knew would be there. I slowed my pace, growing tired from sprinting, and jogged my way to the meadow. When I finally stopped, I collapsed, and realization sank in. I felt as though Delst had betrayed me and our family. Did he not know that we all relied on him for food? Just to survive?!!!? Being engaged meant that he would leave us behind. To start a life with this...this Amelia. Tears started to form, and I quickly glanced around before letting them fall. Ever since father died, I never let anyone see me cry. My tears were more than I expected, they wouldn't stop. I wasn't upset because Delst was leaving, I never got along with him anyway. I was upset because I would never be able to be the supporter. Grandmother will not be able to survive without Delst getting supplies. And he knows that. He knows how much his stupid choice about love will effect us all.
