"There's 'quiet' with 'et' and 'quite' with 'te'. The first one means... Silence. And the second one, ehhhh... You can look that up in a dictionary." I try to explain. Marie giggles. I frown and sigh.
It's lunch time. Marie, Pepper, Colton and I have claimed an empty classroom. I'm giving Marie some more English tutoring. Pepper and Colton are playing Uno. I don't know where they found the cards. Colton is getting increasingly more frustrated while Pepper just reads a book. But she still beats him easily. Terrence still hasn't shown up.
Colton lets out an angry growl as he grabs four extra cards. Marie continues filling in some random spelling exercises we found online. My eyes linger on Colton's lips. I remember this morning and last night. He's driving me crazy.
"What is.. Conspicious?" Marie suddenly asks. I snap out of my revelry and look at her. "Conspicuous." I correct. "Just... Suspicious I guess? Something that stands out..." I trail off with a frown. She nods and smiles, then continues the exercises. I continue watching Colton's face expressions.
Suddenly my phone vibrates. I take the device out of my pocket. There's a text message from mom.
'Terrence just got home. He's hungover and grounded but he's okay.'
"Colt." I say. He looks at me and raises an eyebrow. With a small smile I reach my phone out to him and he gets up to take a closer look. After his eyes scan the text message he grins brightly at me and pulls me into a hug. I hug back. The bell rings. We all collect our stuff and head to our next classes.
After classes Pepper and I start walking home as usual. Colton pops out of nowhere and starts happily chatting away about the upcoming auditions for the school play. Apparently he already know the song the teacher assigned by heart. He even gives sings it for us. It's beautiful and I really hope he gets the part. His eyes shine so brightly when he sings. His entire being lights up and it's beautiful.
"Can we go for a run after interrogating Terry?" he suddenly asks when we reach my house. I nod. Pepper raises her hand in farewell and continues walking without looking back. Colton and I head to the back door.
Terrence is asleep on the couch in the living room. Mom and dad aren't home. Colton wakes Terrence up by punching him with a pillow. He yelps and I try not to smirk too much while drinking a glass of water. "You're such a dumbass!" Colton yells sternly with a hint of anger and crosses his arms. Terrence frowns at him and slowly lifts himself up into a sitting position. "I know." he mumbles. Colton sighs and uncrosses his arms again. Then he pulls Terrence into a tight embrace. "I'm glad you're okay. But please don't do that again."
I shift awkwardly from one foot onto the other. It feels like this is something between best friends. I have no right to be here. My hand reaches up and I take off my glasses. After pulling my sleeves over my hands I start cleaning them just to keep myself occupied.
"Do you have yourself figured out now?" I hear Colton ask. Terrence sighs. "I like guys for sure. But I feel like maybe I should try something with a girl just to be safe. I really don't feel attracted to girls though... How did you handle this?"
This is definitely a conversation I'm not supposed to hear. But I reckon Terrence knows I'm here and I haven't been sent away yet. So I stay and listen.
"I took a sneaky picture of you brother when he was shirtless and masturbated to it at home. Then I tried masturbating to some picture of a girl on the internet. The picture of the girl didn't do anything but the one of Rence... Hot damn."
My entire face is on fire. I can't deal with this. I'm very sure I was not supposed to hear this. I put my glasses on again and quickly make my way to my room. "You're a horrible boyfriend. Don't embarrass my brother like that." "He wasn't embarrassed when he sucked my dick this morning."
I can hear Terrence slapping Colton. I close my bedroom door behind me and lean back against it. My hand finds my phone in my pocket and I pull it out. I open my chat with Colton. 'Not doing the run thing today'.
There's an immediate reply.
'whyyyyy ;-;'
I smile sadly and put my phone down. I don't feel embarrassed. But I do feel kind of... Disgusting now. It's only been about two weeks and I'm already giving blowjobs. There's a soft, single knock on my door. I reach up and lock it.
"Bro, it's me." I hear Terrence his voice. That doesn't make me unlock the door. I don't really want to face the world right now, I need some time to collect my thoughts. Take a step away from myself and reevaluate who I am. Terrence sighs. "I swear to God Colton if you hurt my brother I'm rearranging your face!" he yells. His footsteps storm downstairs. I pick my phone up again and google pictures of penguins. For some reason it actually helps.
A notification pops up at the top of my screen. A message from Colton. 'I'm sorry Rence'. 'Terry and I always make rude jokes but I shouldn't have included you'. 'I'm so sorry'.
I feel a tear roll down my cheek. But there's no reason to cry. There's a thump downstairs. A door being slammed closed. Soft footsteps climb the stairs. A light thump against the other side of my door. Someone slides down against it. "I'm sorry Rence." Colton says. "It's okay." I reply. Silence. Then suddenly there's knocking on my door and: "Do you wanna build a snowman?"
I snort. Colton continues singing. I can hear his bright smile in his voice. "Come on let's go out and play... "
After serenading me Colton heads home. My chest feels warm and fuzzy. I do my homework and go to bed with a smile on my face.
