It was very rare that a peaceful evening occurred. In a life full of death and pain and utter chaos, you sometimes wondered if there was even such a thing as 'peace' anymore. This night was an exception however, one that had reminded you that there was indeed still peace in the world.
The moon shone bright upon the dirt streets of Alexandria, freshly fallen snow laying gently at your feet. It was a simple thing, the beauty of a snowy winter night. But it was something that you held dearly, encase you never had the chance to see it again. It seemed as though snowflakes fell for so long, but as soon as they hit your smooth skin, they diminished, disappeared into nothingness.
On this particular night, Maggie and Glenn had planned a small community dinner in their own house, one which you, Rick, and Carl had all planned on attending. As it turned out, Rick ended up getting sick and decide it would be best for him not to attend. He also made the point that the two of you had yet to have any luck finding a babysitter for Judith.
You insisted on staying, offering to take care of Rick and watch Judith so he could rest, but Rick kindly obliged, forcing you to take Carl to the dinner. You didn't have a problem with that, you and Carl got along.
The party went fairly well, you enjoyed being able to spend time with the people you learned to call family. You had been part of the group since the beginning, and though you didn't realize or feel it, the rest of the group thought of you as a very valuable person. You always put others before yourself.
Even though the evening was well and good, your other part was missing, Rick. He was all you thought about for most of the night. You missed him, even though it had only been a few meek hours since the last time you two had seen eachother.
After dinner, Carl asked you if he and Enid could stay at Glenn and Maggie's for awhile, seeing as they were practically Enid's adoptive parents. You agreed, saying that if it was fine with them then it would be alright with you. You grabbed your things, putting on your light jacket which unfortunately didn't do much against the bitter cold of winter.
You walked out onto the front porch and saw Daryl. The two of you talked for a bit about things, you two had always been like brother and sister. The conversation that you shared delved deep, and you both found yourselves talking about the people you've lost and the people you could lose. It erupted a sort of nervousness, and uneasy concoction to flood your senses, making you even more eager to get home to your love, to Rick.
Daryl offered to walk you home, which you gratefully denied, wanting sometime to think to yourself. You gave Daryl a hug, telling him to come by whenever he needed to. Then you were off. The snow made it harder to see, and vast wind began thrashing the snow even more. As far as you could see it was a pure white out, a blizzard. You hugged yourself tightly, wishing that you had listened to Rick and put a heavier coat on.
You trudged aimlessly for awhile more, not sure where you were or how you would get home. That is, until you saw it. A light, blaring from the window of a house infront of you, you and Rick's house. As you enclosed on the house, you saw Rick through the window, all dressed up. A smile formed crept its way onto your face as you opened the front door, wiping your snow covered boots on the welcome mat.
"What's all this?" you beamed, a warm feeling replacing the uneasy one which you had had earlier.
Rick turned to face you, awing at your frost nipped nose and cheeks. He made his way over to you, looking down and taking your cold hands in his before meeting your eyes again.
"This," he started, "is Christmas eve."
Your smile grew as you chuckled softly, "are you serious?"
It was all too easy to lose track of time nowadays, especially holidays. It didn't really feel like there was much to celebrate anymore. But Rick new you, and he listened every time you would talk about the idea of having Christmas again. It was simple, and you always felt stupid when you said if outloud, but Christmas was something that you missed the most about the world before. You missed being with your family on winter nights such as this, you missed opening presents and seeing the joy play out on everyone's faces. You just missed it.
Rick pursed his lips, nodding lightly.
You let out a small but love filled airy laugh. The idea that anyone would do something like this for you was mind blowing to you. No one had ever done anything like this before.
The room was festive, colorful lights and ornaments hanging off of the thing branches of what appeared to be a fake tree. You wondered how he pulled it off, but decide not to let it get to you. You could feel your face flush a light pink as Rick rubbed his thumb over the back of your cracked and red hand.
"How'd you get back anyways," Rick catechized, "it's so bad out there I was about to go get you myself. You worried me." he smiled gently, making your knees feel weak.
It all felt like a dream, seeing your love stand in a room with a tree decorated with small colorful but beautiful lights. It felt like a fantasy knowing that he did it all for you.
"The lights, " you whispered, letting the words linger in the air for awhile, "I saw the lights, and they brought me home to you."
Rick exhaled smoothly, placing a gentle kiss on your chapped lips.
the lights shall lead you home.
