TW: Panic Attack

My fingers draped over Akane's cold, wet shoulders.

"What, no, you're insane!"

"But Neku Sakuraba, I don't have a brain, how can I be insane?"

"Your-....no! You can't be a robot!"

"But I am Neku Sakuraba"

We just stared at each other. Akane's eyes, empty, only occasionally blinking. It was all silent and dark. All the lights were off, except the pool lights, creating water waves on our faces.

"WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU TWO DOING!?" A synthetic voice yelled.

I quickly looked over to see who it was

"Oh, V" Akane replied calmly

"Akane, what the hell are you doing?" V said as he walked over to the edge of the pool.

"An experiment." Akane said as she swam to V.

"What were you doing with emo kid? You guys weren't doing anything weird, right?"

"He was my bodyguard"

V pulled Akane out of the water.

"Okay, good..."

I could hear it in his synthetic voice, he was worried about her but didn't want to admit it. V rested her hands on Akane's soaking shoulders as he stared at V, his mask noticeably crooked.Seeing them side by side, I noticed V was roughly the same height as Akane. If they silhouettes, it would look like they were practically the same person.

We all left the gym through the back and into the back alleyway. Akane and I now dry.

"Hey Neku" V said

I turned him

"See you tomorrow for the mission..."

Before I could respond he walked away with an arm around Akane's shoulder. I watched them go until I couldn't see them anymore.

I deeply breathed in the cold night air. I felt some of my anxiety leave my body. I started to feel more at ease. Like all the stress and anxiety I've had for the last few days just left me for a brief moment. All while the gentle noise of cars and conversation echo through the dark alleyway and soft light from traffic and head lights illuminated the alleyway through small cracks.

"Enjoying yourself?" a honeyed voice coming from the shadows broke all sense of peace I had.

Soft clunks echoed through the alleyway, becoming louder and louder. With every clunk, my heart beat louder and louder in my head. The figure revealed himself. His bleached spiked hair swaying in the cold night wind along with his long black jacket, swaying just below his ankles. His sunglasses reflecting the street lights. It was him.

It was Bates.

"What's the matter?" He asked jokingly, letting out a small chuckle in the process as he leaned down to reach my level. I tried my best to not let my fear show.

"Boo!"

I flinched. He laughed in response as he leaned back up.

"So Neku...How are you liking my game so far?"

I didn't answer.

"What? Cat caught your tongue?" He asked in a sarcastic tone before stretching his arms up

"Ah...Must be nice...Having this city all to yourself"

"Why are you doing this?" I managed to get out
